Either those wolves truly saw him as prey, or he was being ultra sneaky going through the woods. I have come up on wolves grouse hunting in very thick cover, not being particularly quiet, but have only seen them when wind was in my favor. Even in those instances I think they just wait to see what you are before slinking off, and I've only caught a glimpse of them. Pretty much impossible to "sneak up" or stumble upon 3 wolves. Too many of those things in the great lakes region, and fear of humans is being lost. I love having them around, but just like any other predator, they need to be managed.

trust me, you can bump into a pack of wolves with out them knowing you are there. been there, done that. But it does not happen very often.

There's a lot written on the subject of bear defense. But very little with regard to wolf defense.

I dunno, but I would think a Saiga 12 gauge with buckshot would be ideal. For sure not a .380 IMO.

Lots of trappers kill them with .22's but have the advantage of taking the time to put the shot in the exact right place. A .25 will do in those circumstances too. If I was surrounded by a pack of MMA tough, 100+ pound dogs that make their living by killing things way bigger than themselves, I'd want more fire-power. I'd feel better with my 10mm and a full magazine or two.

Crazy story. Interesting he was carrying fmj ammo in a small caliber. I use a bonded bullet in my 380 and have no doubt it will kill a 200lb. predator, 2 or 4 legged, but do not carry it in the woods. Although I am with AK, my .40 stuffed to the gills, just a step behind the 10mm, would make me happier.

As a WI bowhunter, I have been carrying a .357 mag on my hip ever since seeing a wolf from my stand a few years ago. When Im blood trailing I should expect that I am not the only predator doing so. Bear, wolf, big cats, coyote are all good reasons to pack.

Military training or not.. 99% of us would have fired multiple rounds. This was one of the reasons I said this sounds "fishy" to me.
not to be disrespectful, but would this not be the exact definition of being calm, cool and collected in a tense situation.

either way it is easy to Monday morning quarterback this one.

None taken at all tim... just opinions and fun to discuss. I can promise if something was trying to eat me it would get more than one round though- And your right, I wouldn't be too calm or collected lol.

How many "wolf" attacks are there or have there been? I worry about Grizz, not so much about blackies, but never have even given it a thought about wolves as I figured they would high tail it out.
