Pretty much self tought here . When i was a kid there was no guns in my house. I wouldn't say my dad is an anti but was pretty close . I grew up on a busy road with nothing but woods behind me . I spent all my time in the woods when i was a kid. My brother bought me a single shot 20 guage for my 16th birthday. Probably the best gift i have ever got. My dad was pissed. My older brother took me a few times but its really not his thing either. A close buddy (still to this day) took me to the next level and my passion reall has never stopped . I have really passed it in to my kids and my dad even has a gun in the house now for protection . To eaches own but if a person wants something in this country there is no excuse. I just want to kill an elk before i die. 😁

Learned everything from my dad. He did it all, hunted, fished, trapped. We were up to something every weekend. We even hoop net fished a local river for years and had some memorable moments. I remember when the buffalo were making their spring run and the hoop net was so full of fish we couldn't get the net into the boat. Dad had to cut a hole in the net and take them out one by one. We filled the boat to the gunnel and dad just started throwing fish back in. Too many cigarettes and asbestos cut his life way to short and died at the age of 53.

Posting a little late as my computer has been in the shop for a tune up.

My Dad, Grandfather and their friends taught me the basics. I hunted and fished with Gramps until he was 87 when he passed and my Dad until he was 92 when he got dementia and I couldn't trust him with a gun. I took Dad elk hunting here in Colorado when he was 90 and he got his last elk. I started my son hunting when he was 8. I had 3 sisters and was the only son and the oldest, so you know how much time I got to spend hunting and fishing with Dad and Gramps.

My Dad used to take me duck hunting when I was 7 or 8 and carry my thru the mud and water to the blind on his back. I shot my Dad's first gun, a single shot Eastern Arms 20ga. I still have it. My Uncle (Dad's brother) just passed at 97. I hunted with him a lot too. Miss them all a lot. Lots of great times and memories.

I remember many times getting packed through the muck and mire to a hunting blind by my brother in law. In Utah we couldn't hunt small game until we were 14 and then big game until we were 16. Kids now days don't know how good they have it when it comes to hunting except for most states going to a draw system but there are lots of youth hunts if they can talk their parents into taking them out on them.

Dad and Mom got me started, but I was immediately addicted. For over 45 years since I have been absorbing everything I can from all my hunting experiences across the West and Ak, as well as, picking up any knowledge I can from reading, hearing about or participating in other people's hunting adventures.
After all these years I still can't get enough!:)

My dad never hunted as a kid, and did not hunt until an adult. So basically we both learned together. What he did teach me was, to go to the mountains. I never really killed much until i stopped hunting with him and his buddies. Than, it really took off. So great memories with him in the mountains, but not to many great memories with animals. I never killed an elk with him, but he did help pack out unitl it was to late.

I took him to the kill site of my first herd bull. It was everything he could do to get there. F#ck cancer. That was the last time he help. 2007.

My dad took my brother and I hunting a few times, but he wasn't passionate about it. But, when I was 14 I met a classmate at my new school (we moved every few years for my dad's job), and he was consumed by it. Brad's father was the Jr. High science teacher, and a real gun guy. He even started and coached the school .22 target league in the grade school basement. Brad & I spent all available time hunting & fishing. We reconnected after we both got out of the service & made a few fishing trips together. We had big plans after we retired from law enforcement to hunt & fish the entire continent. Unfortunately, Brad was killed in a car accident on his way to a hot call, so those trips will never happen. The last day I wore my uniform was to his funeral.
