Who has had a hunting buddy back out?

Do you guys tend to hunt "with" your "hunting buddies"? I have a couple people I "hunt with" but not during the day. They're just extra bodies for a joke around camp and to split the camp chores, maybe play a couple rounds of cards or Yahtzee if it's not quite bedtime yet. When we actually go out to HUNT it's always in different directions. The most we do is work out quadrants where we'll be in case somebody gets hurt, and to avoid accidents...
For archery elk, we typically hunt in pairs and take turns being caller or shooter on setups. We typically split up the rest of the time unless we are stalking a herd to fill some cow tags. The benefit of having those extra bodies in camp is after the shot.

I have my dad that I can always count on and 1 friend. And my one friend we don't even talk much unless its about hunting. But whenever I draw a tag he always goes if I ask him to. We've only drawn a few tags together. And they were all in MT. But he's went with me on hunts in NV twice, ID twice, CO, and WA. And we always have a good time even if the hunting isn't as good as we had hoped it would be.

I have taken a few different friends hunting out of state that I will never take again. Way to much complaining for me either during the hunt or after the hunt from them.

Good hunting buddies I think are harder to find than a wife:D Never had anyone back out after applying for tags thankfully. We have a group every year of 4-6 of us who go out to Wyoming. We add new people every once in a while. We have a "No DH" rule and it doesn't stand for designated hitter. So far we have been lucky.

I have never had anyone back out. However, a number of times a guy or two just didn't want to be on the hunt. Had guys basically want to leave after one day of hunting and a few times after 2 or 3 days.

I unfortunately will be going solo this year as well. My hunting buddy was killed in a car accident 2 weeks ago. Really sad situation for his family. We had 9 deer points each going into the draw and ended up getting our second choice whitetail tag. Gonna be tough going solo when I finally draw that mule deer tag. He was always up for a Wyoming adventure and loved hunting out there.
Lost one of my four sons to a car accident in 2000. One of the best partners I ever had. You may find a little peace in the fact that my son has been "with" me on every hunt since. Your partner will be too.

I had a couple of tags this year myself, CO and ID. I left on August 8th and returned home on Sept 6th. I hunted by myself the entire time. Filled both tags too! Personally I love hunting by myself as I can hunt and do whatever and wherever I want.

WOW- must be nice. Retired? Congrats on filling both tags and more importantly on having a great trip.

I'm only 47 y/o and not retired yet. What I do have is my own business and an incredibly understanding wife!! The main thing I did was line up childcare to help my wife by simply having them pick up our 3 and 6 y/o from school so my wife didn't have to rush home after work. That alone was a huge help and allowed me to be gone for so long. I was also fortunate enough to have cell/wireless service out there and was able to work quite a bit too on my hunt. Some would say I should disconnect and not work while on vacation, but when you take 4 weeks off for a hunt there's still work to be done!

I still have an on-range oryx hunt in NM in a few weeks, but my wife is coming on that hunt with me.
