Oh to be young again. The bounce went out of me a few years ago, so I make great pains to avoid having to do the tuck and roll. I'm jealous boys, keep up the good work.

Run after a fairly heavy leg day is always tough. Tomorrow is upper body and a longer run on Sunday morning. Should be a good weekend workout session.

Tim; at 21 I maxed the Marine Corps PFT, at 25 could bench 300#, at 27 ran my first marathon, at 33 earned a black belt, at 41 got the highest PFT score at the FBI Academy, canoed over 1,500 miles the last four summers, solo backpacked last Sept. to 11,000' & 35 miles deer hunting, am 62, but I still don't bounce well. Ten minutes ago I did 20 pullups. My martial arts training saved my ass many times...not in fights, but in avoiding injury on falls. Keep it up young man. I still ain't no Colorado Cowboy.

that is funny you say martial arts saved you in falls. My parents had me take karate in 3rd grade, and learning to fall has helped me more times than I can remember.

I made my walk 5 miles today. Going to pick up the weights for a few when I put this tablet down. Reading about you guys' work out as makes me think more about doing today instead of doing tomorrow.

HeavyStepper; I've posted this before, but for your benifit: When I was working out at the Marine Corps fitness center in 29 Palms, CA about 40 years ago, they had a wall poster that said: "Physical fitness is transitory, it must be worked for continuously, and the only program of effective value is a lifetime one." Staying in shape is far easier than getting in shape. Carpe Diem

Thanks RicMic. That saying is right. Just like "you can't outrun your fork". I've neglected my fitness for 30 someodd years and so found myself in
heckofa bad shape. I'm working on it now and am trying to make changes that I can live with long term, not do for a couple of months, reach or fail to reach my goal, and then quit. I have a long way to go before I'm ready to pack out an elk, but I've come a long way in the last 3 months.

I can totally relate Heavy. I found myself in the get back into shape mode myself last year. Ended up passing on a bull because I was too far in and it would have probably killed me getting him out. This year I plan on hunting a harder area and will be in shape for it. And your dead on, there isnt a quick fix or an easy way. Consistency is the only way. I still have a long ways to go, but it took me time to get this far out of shape and its going to take time to get back in.

Wind was pretty bad today so I had to pick a route that didn't have as many open areas for me to get blown over. May do an upper body workout this evening, need to do some core work and chest.

18 miles total running last week, but feeling pretty much recovered from the big race.

Spent a good part of the weekend doing cross training... Trenched 650' with a trencher then glued and placed PVC in it, did some hand digging and recovered a trampoline from where it blew into the canyon behind my house. The trenching doesn't sound like that big of a deal, but it actually seemed like a solid chunk of manual labor when it was all said and done. That's my kind of cross training.

You're right coastal arms and good luck with your own goals! I made it five miles today. It was hard to follow that up with a salad, but the homemade blackened chicken on it made it much better!

The problem with getting in shape and losing weight is that it often takes years to get in bad shape. It takes time to take it back off and it is so frustrating that it takes so long to knock the weight back off.

Did a trail run before work this morning. They timbered this area a month ago and is quite a workout since the trail is not a trail any more. not a fast run but you have to be careful and keep your balance. Almost bit the dust twice!!

yep, no easy fix....This day and age we get use to instant fixes, that's probably why there are some many "magic weight loss" programs out there.....

I think this is the 3rd or 4th time I've tried to get back in shape and I've made it farther this time than any of the other attempts. I think what is helping me this time is I have just made gradual changes. Started by saying I was going to walk every other night. Then, once I had that down I started adding more to it. Resistance bands, weighted packs, then doing something every day except Sunday.

The diet part is what I have the hardest time with, and I have an in house expert (wife is a Registered Dietitian). We did the same gradual changes. One thing that wasn't gradual is I cut out all the crappy fast food I was eating. Its so damn easy to hit a drive thru when you travel a lot..At home and on the road I've tried to have more fruit, veggies and salads... and tried to make them more appealing so I will actually eat them. Simple stuff like substituting better ingredients has helped too. For example, we started using whole wheat noodles for spaghetti. My wife bakes a lot so we sub in whole wheat flour (or at least half), flax seeds in stuff, blueberries in stuff...that sort of thing. No extreme crazy changes that I would fail at...just little stuff that helps bit by bit.

So far I've only lost about 10 pounds, but I have gone from a 38" waist to a 34" and i don't even break a sweat with things that used to exhaust me.

one person asked me one time, how do I get out so much. My answer was: pencil it in, in your day planner, just like you schedule meetings, you schedule exercise or recreation. If you don't book it, you are just BS'ing, is another way to look at it.
