I used to run a lot, but fortunately never had a shin splint issue. The best advice that I learned way to late was to replace my shoes far more often than I did. A professional trainer for the Chicago Bulls taught a class at the FBI Academy, and he told us that 500 miles should be max on a pair of running shoes, and 300 would be better. I would wear a pair for the whole year because I was too cheap to replace shoes that still looked good. Doing the new shoe routine, along with limiting running too much on the sloped road shoulder made a hugh difference for me, primarily on saving my knees. At 62, the knees are still good, but it was arthritis in my hips and big toes that finally ended my running. CARPE DIEM
