Do you hunt much with a smoke pole? (your handle is musket man any how haha) Thats all I used to do in WA until I got fed up with the one week early season and limited late season and switched to bow.
Used to go to utah every year with the musket. Went to colorado with it last year and will again this year if I draw a tag again!!

when i hunted them with a rifle it was with my "everything" rifle. Ruger M77 in 7 rem mag stainless and 140 gr Accubonds after switching from ballistic silvertips. love the 140 gr bullet. i killed a cow elk in December with the same bullet. what an awesome round this is on any big game i've encountered with it.

I used a .280 rem for a while it is a great round, but just got a .270 WSM built. Shooting 140 grain accubonds and the muley I got in Wyoming this year didn't get out of bed at 200 yards. Bullet got there so fast I could see his head start to drop as the recoil set in, it was pretty cool. .270 WSM is a great cartridge for open country.

I shoot a pre 64 model 70 in 300 ICL with 200 gr. Accubonds for big muleys and a 700 BDL in 270 with 130 gr. Accubonds for California bucks.

I have 4 different hunting rifles, but really only use one. I shoot a 7mm WSM loaded with 160 grain accubonds. It has shot 5 antelope, 2 deer, and 2 elk. All one shot kills.

My custom 264 has gotten the call so far. It is a stainless Winchester M70 classic action with a Mcgowan 25" #3 fluted barrel, Wyatt extended magazine box, and a 4-12 Leupold VX-R CDS scope. I have 2 stocks for it depending on the situation. A walnut thumbhole stock for whitetail around home and flatter country, and a lighter Bell & Carlson synthetic for steeper country. It's no featherweight at 9lbs 3oz with the synthetic ready to hunt (scope, sling, ammo) but it sure shoots well and I have faith in it. I have studs for the Stoney point rapid pivot bipods on both stocks. I load 140gr accubonds at 3000fps and they perform excellent, but I am still experimenting with the 140gr Bergers looking for a load. I'm still considering buying or building a lighter rifle in 280AI for the steep country but haven't done it yet. The Kimber 84L Montana in 280AI has been tempting me.

For years it was a .338 if I hadn't gotten my elk yet. Then I would switch to my .257 bob. These days I find a .270 wizzum on my shoulder for everything.

Weatherby Mark IV Custom firing 180 grain Nos. Partitions. There is absolutely no substitute. Weatherby rifles matched with their ammunition = best ballistics in the industry.

I use the same Remington 700 in .270 Win. that I use for elk. I load Barnes 130 gr. TSX or TTSX bullets for mulies, and 110 gr. bullets for the little Coues whitetails here. It has a Leupold scope on it. Used it hunting deer in MO, CO, NM and AZ. Never had any problems nor any long tracking jobs with it.
