What mule deer hunt would you burn your points on in Colorado?

I posted this under Mule Deer but wanted to put it under here as well. I am not sure if you are supposed to post same thread twice so if not let me know and I will delete it.

Well it is that time of year again and wanting to pick all of your brains while this is all fresh in your minds, I will be sitting on 17 points as a resident after the 2017 draw going into 2018 application process. I have been dreaming of a great mule deer hunt for well 17 years. My goal would be to kill a 180" or better buck. I will be to busy this year to apply but I am planning for 2018.

There are so many options out there, I would really love to archery hunt but having that many points tends to create a lot of pressure to be successful so may burn points on a rifle hunt then start over for archery after that. Honestly I have dreamed of killing a giant typical buck since I was a kid and due to such a busy hunt schedule helping friends and family over the years I have found myself with so many points. I wanted to ask others on here with the vast base of knowledge what you would all do if you were in my shoes? I am 36 yrs old and fully capable of getting it done in any terrain. My work schedule gives me quite a bit of free time in September but super busy the rest of the summer before that. I also have time in November as well. This sets me up for either an early or late hunt opportunity.

With that being said I have heard good things about late rifle 21 and 44, but have not been to either unit. Helped my dad kill a great buck in unit 2 a couple of years ago but numbers were down and I was not super impressed with the unit at that time, but still could be a good choice now. Also heard 61 can be great but hard to hunt, I will be there helping my dad elk muzzy hunt this year so I will be getting a feel for what it has to offer. I know there are some great early rifle opportunities up high in the wilderness areas as well (74, 36 and 43). Typically I am extremely busy all summer working in the agriculture industry which eats up most of what would be the good scouting time of the year. Any other areas I should be considering or learning in preparation for what I hope to be a hunt of a lifetime for me!

Thanks for any input and help and good luck to all of you in this year's draw and your hunting adventures!

If you are free check out Unit 2 again this year come November, the area we hunted. Lots of very nice up and comer typicals we saw in the 170's that could be there by the time you want to draw

Yeah I plan on it for sure, thanks for the advice and I may hit you up again for some info to refresh my mind before I go there. Did you decide to pull the trigger on an elk unit for this year?

Sounds good! I've got another year or two before I burn em on an archery hunt, I'm sitting at 5 points. This summer is tough as I am getting married so scouting would be tough!!

What's wasted in getting 17 points?

I had 17 points when I burned them for a muzzle loader elk hunt and hunted elk every one of those 17 years while I was gaining points.

Just curious, what units require 17 points to draw? This is not intended to be sarcastic in any way, but it seems like the answer to the question of what unit to consider, would start with a list of the units that require that many points because obviously they must be good?

For elk and as a resident look at 61 muzzle loader tag for one along with those up in the northwest corner of the state. I can't remember which one it is but for a elk muzzle loader tag it is up around 22 points.

Stumpy, you would think that you could hunt anywhere with that many points..... but you can't surprisingly. There are a lot of people that bank points dreaming about a killer hunt someday. With more and more people doing this and still hunting as mentioned above tags that are available is a great way to have your cake and eat it to in a sense. To answer your question though the list is fairly short for sure but still just because these units take so long to draw doesn't mean there are 180 bucks running around all over.

Thanks for the replies, I was just curious and was asking seriously. Yeah, I wouldn't expect just because a unit takes that long to draw that it's going to be anything guaranteed about it.

When I drew my unit 61 ML elk tag we did a lot of scouting of the unit. We did see a few nicer bulls but I ended up shooting a real nice 5x6. We did see a lot of 350" bulls but not very many larger than that.

61 is my favorite elk unit in CO. Ok for deer, but there are better ones. I would look at 66 or 67 for deer, as long as they all didn't die off again last winter.

Elkhunter96,

I will hopefully be taking my dad for an elk hunt in 61 this fall. I appreciate the input on this I will hopefully get a chance to check it out for sure.

Listen to the Epic Outdoors Podcast. They have one for Colorado deer that focuses on high point holders like you. They do a good job of breaking down units.

Check out the "new last year" Early Rifle season in GMU 61. It's Either sex and is before the regular first season ... very nice. Hunt code is EE061E1R. It took 19 points for residents last year so you're very close.

Sorry, I just re-read your OP and see you're looking for a deer area. I got thrown off by a couple of elk comments ... my fault.

If I were you, I would look at the Unit 44 late hunt. I've hunted that unit several times and have seen some nice bucks running around it.

Good luck!
