fackelberry, I looked into a situation very similar to this- maybe the same area? I considered installing a couple of guzzlers but never seriously looked into what it would take or the regulations on doing it.

Let me know if you're looking for a hunt-partner...
I'm old enough to know better, but still to young to care. This sounds right up my alley.

The one way trip is probably gonna be 7 miles to where a person would camp, so 14 miles roundtrip just to camp and back out to trucks. Once a person got into it there is at least 12 square miles of huntable BLM and State ground. I'm thinking a person would have to find a water source in there. It does show a pretty good creek on the map all on public but don't know if it runs year around. I was thinking about hiring a small plane and flying over the area with my GPS and seeing what is all around and what it looks like from the air. That would tell me alot about the place i think. I would really like to find a way into it that wouldn't be too hard or more effort than what its worth. If it was good hunting a person could hunt it every year and probably get a damn good bull. I have personally seen a 402, 360,350 and a couple 330 bulls come out of there. Not all on the same year and they were all spread out aways up and down the ridge and came off 3 different landowners but its all the same country that runs for miles. One of the landowners is a brother in-law to my friend, he was the one who shot the 350 bull. He said its stupid how many 300-320 bulls are running up there. His brother in-law made him pass up a bunch of 320 bulls he said before he shot the 350. I would like to try it one time just to see and know if it's all that good. So i will keep studying and looking into access.

I found another helicopter service i'm gonna try asking and see what rates are. They advertise doing drop camp for hunters on BLM lands. It would be farther than i thought of renting a chopper, but maybe if 3 guys split the cost it wouldnt be so bad. All will depend on their prices and if they want to fly that far. I will look into the non-resident draw odds for elk there and let you guys know how many points it took to draw. Anybody have a Doctor buddy or relative with a helicopter that he wouldn't mind flying a few hunters in to hunt. LOL!

fackleberry,

I successfully hunted elk in the unit you're talking about last year...and I also looked around at helicopter rides. Found out a lot about the unit, including some interesting stuff from the BLM. Also ran into a real dandy of a landowner, tried to illegally post a county road...that ended poorly for him. He got it handed to him by the Sheriff...too bad he didn't get fined. Tried working with him and he just wasn't having any of it.

Never could reach the country I really wanted to hunt, like you I walked "close" to where I wanted to go from the Northern public access point. Its just flat too far to pack elk without stock or getting a ride in there, we need to talk as I have interest in trying this one again. I wouldn't want to go with more than 1 or 2 other people though...and only someone that was serious about staying the course and putting in a full effort if a person were to go through the expense and trouble to get back there.

I passed a couple decent 6 points early and that was a mistake looking back. My buddy and I each shot elk in there in early Nov in the southern part of the unit...and it was about 6 miles one way and we shot them on a pretty small piece of BLM.

Shoot me a PM...don't want to dive into too many details on the open forum.
