Waterproof pants

Hello everyone, I'm planning on buying some waterproof pants for hunting and am need of your advice. I like to wear a base layer and waterproof pants, it makes me lighter and gives me more room in my bag, blah blah blah. my question is: which waterproof pants have you found to 1) be the most effective/durable? 2) quietest? 3) breathable? 4) cost effective?

Just how "waterproof" to meet your needs?

I live in Oregon and hunt in Kuiu Attack pants in lots of weather conditions, including certain levels of rain, and they are not even considered a rain pant. On the other end of the spectrum we use fully rubberized pants or Simms waders when fishing the ocean here, pulling crab traps and getting soaked.

Waterproof like rain gear pants. That article is fantastic, thank you for the link. From earlier research I like what KUIU and Kryptek offer. I like sitka but $1000 is too much money for two pieces.

I have really liked my core4 torrent rain gear. It is light weight and very quiet, not super breathable though. Good luck in your search let us know what you decide to go with

Core4 torrent rain gear has worked great for me.

goretex is goretex. by some cheaper ones. they are rain pants, not I have money pants.
Also when it is really wet, and I mean really wet, nothing beats rubber.

I recently bought the Kuiu Chugach rain pants, and totally impressed ! Light Weight, waterproof, and they breathe, also have zippers down both sides so you can dump heat if it's not pouring down rain. I can tell you how durable yet, only worn them in a few rain storms ( pouring and blowing sideways ) and stayed dry.

I grew up in Or, and yes Rubber keeps you dry, but you sweat in rubber if doing any activites like hiking

Check out Frogg Toggs, they're not the quietest, but they're polypropylene, so they're quieter and lighter than gore-tex, but will still make that scratching sound if you rub against branches and such. But, I don't put them on until it's raining or really cold and windy and I figure by that point, the noise they make won't be an issue.

I've worn them in everything short of torrential rain with no leak issues... a bit warm in warm weather, but anything waterproof will be.

I don't think they have a lot of options as far as camo, if that's one of your criteria, though.

The new Ultra NX is not a "wear all day, everyday" type of pant. It's awesome for hunts where raingear comes out of the pack for short periods each day or so. Think August/September-early October high country hunts.

Why not just stick with the Chugach then? I am looking at purchasing a new set of rain gear from you guys and saw the new stuff is more expensive with less features. Is it the weight that puts the price there? Just curious what is the best set for me. I normally need it in the Sept - Oct months here in Colorado. I will be heading to Sitka in 2016 for a deer hunt though so I will need it there as well.

The face fabric on the Ultra NX is more expensive than that of the Chugach NX. Sounds like for your needs, Chugach is still the ticket. Ultra NX isn't intended to replace Chugach by any means, it just fills a different niche.

Marmot makes a great set of rain pants that are as lightweight as you can get and reasonably cheap ~$50. I've had them for a couple years and they're basically indestructible. Can't remember the model name, but they're black in color with an elastic waist and leg cuffs. Shouldn't be difficult to find.
