I've been reading Elknuts playbook, and an effective method to me sounds like the wallow sitting method. Has anyone tried this and had any success? This is my first year elk hunting so I haven't been able to try it.

I haven't hunted over a wallow in 40 years. It's not something I see a lot of value in unless you have some well patterned elk and a camera to document it.

Because the wind always moves, sitting around a wallow too much could just burn it for good. Hunt the routes in and out the area depending on where the wind currently helps you the most.

It can be very effective early season... As the rut progresses you will be dealing with herds instead of singles so your chance of being busted go way up. If possible, use a tree stand to help with concealment/scent.

To me, good elk hunters are opportunistic. You can't go in with just one game plan and stick to it unless you have a unique situation where you know what the elk do daily...even then adaptability will produce more elk. You need to be willing to spot and stalk, do calling set ups, sit travel corridors, or as your looking at, sit water. Sometimes a combination of these is needed... Good luck and have a blast learning- I know I did.

Hilltop is spot on. You have to be able to make the most of the situations presented to you, no matter the style of hunting. Wallows seem to get more activity earlier in the rut, but higher temperatures can also key more frequent visits to cool off when their internal temperature is about 7000 degrees. :)

You always here about those who get lucky sittin a wallow. Personally I'm more of a spot an stock run an gun kinda hunter. My hunting partner tends to sit wallows more frequently and he's usually lucky...so not to say that doesn't work just not as prevalent has the season progresses.

Here is a link to a video of the bull I killed last year. I watched him at this wallow off and on for almost an week with my hunting buddies. I didn't kill him over this wallow but I could've if I hadn't killed him the 3rd morning into the hunt. I caught him going to his bedding area instead.
