Vortex Diamondback as a Gift?

Hi all

My awesome wife knows how badly I have been wanting, really needing, a new rifle scope for my '06. She offered to buy me one for my first father's day gift.

After some digging, I settled on a 3-9X50 Vortex diamondback because it is affordable and by all accounts I have read, a damn good scope and i like the clarity, etc... Plus it seems Vortex has an excellent warranty and outstanding CS.

The question is; should I ask for the $250 and put it toward an upgrade (like a Leupold VX-II) or should I stick with the original idea and just be happy my wife buys me a scope at all? I guess I would prefer that but I don't want to have her put that money into a scope that I might not ultimately be happy with. That would hurt her feelings and I would feel crappy too.

Thanks in advance for any thoughts!

PS, even though the VX-II isn't much more, I would consider it an upgrade because its a Leupold and maybe that is an outdated way of looking at optics since there are so many other quality choices.

you will not be disappointed with vortex diamondbacks, I wouldn't even consider the Leopold to be an upgrade. both great optics but vortex really is hard to beat in that price range.

Let the wife buy you the full on gift. Don't back out of the gift and ask for the $$. There will always be another scope to buy, but you can only have one first ever fathers day gift from the old lady.

I'm with Johnsd16. Then when you get it, wax eloquently about how nice it is, use it, and consider it spousal training for future gift buying opportunities.

Lol. Y'all are awesome; I guess it really was more a question of how to handle the situation as opposed to whether or not it is a good scope although I did need a bit of confidence boost for vortex. I just haven't had any personal experience with them outside the store. Thank you all for your responses. The diamondback it is!

After trying to find the best price, I actually realized they don't make a 3-9X50 as far as I can tell. In the 50mm objective it will have to be a 3.5-10 which is too much zoom (for me). Plus I don't want to fuss with potentially having to get high profile mounts and screwing up my cheek weld, etc...

Going to set her up with links for a 3-9x40 and in 10 years I'll really have something to look back on.

Thanks again everybody.!

I hope you guys are right. Just bought a Vortex 4x12x40 to replace my 32yr old Leopold 2x7. I noticed it wasn't as clear as a newer 2x7 or my Burris.

Good luck to the both of us on the vortex purchase.

I have no experience with Vortex optics but I know they are relativley new. Only time will tell if they make quality long lasting products.
Will today's Vortex scopes still be in trouble free use 35 years from now like my Leoupold scope?

Boy, that really boils it down don't it? I do know that at a minimum, you want the diamondback line. The crossfire line just doesn't cut the mustard on a big game caliber rig. What I have settled on is this; if it doesn't seem to work on the '06 I will mount on the .222 and just save the extra money to get that Leupold. Either way, I win in this case (I think...)

And yes, Fish, good luck to you as well! We can compare notes!

I have had that same 3-9x40 DBack scope for two years now and it's held up great so far. I missed a forkie coues at 440yd last October but that wasn't the scope's fault... [emoji31]

Just bought my second vortex and it's the viper hs 4-16x44 awesome tracking and clarity is awesome! I had the crossfire and broke it first time out the box tightening the rings whoops my bad they fixed it no questions asked. Can't go wrong with their warranty.
