All,
My brother will officially be discharged from the Marines on Friday and while he was enlisted I had been telling him that we will go on a Western hunt (probably elk) when he gets out. However, not looking for sympathy by any means, but when he comes out he will have a disability giving him a reminder of his time in the Marines for the remainder of his life. Time will tell how much this will nag him, but unofficially he has been told he could have between 60-100% disability, but he needs to visit with a VA doctor when he gets home to finalize all that.

I would like to take him on a hunt and we have some points in Wyoming and Colorado for elk and antelope. I've just started some research, but is there a special hunt for veterans or ones with disability? Please feel to PM and I am trying to come up with different options for us to hunt together.

Thanks.

Tell your brother "Thank You for his service" for me, as I am also a disabled vet (50%). I am not familiar with all the states and how they handle this, but there are several organizations I know of that have sponsored hunts for disabled vets. SCI is one that had a hunt here locally for a vet. Might be a place to start. Also I would pick a state or 2 and contact them directly.

Good Luck!

My experience with the VA and their rating system is that it could be quite lengthy before they settle on a rating.

Good Luck!

What do you need help with? A place to hunt? Mobility issues?

On the disability process side make sure he has representation by one of the VA organizations. I'm well versed in dealing with the government, but the DAV was still a huge help to me.

I fought with the VA for 20 years and had the DAV as my advocate, still took all that time to finally get it right. Without them, might have never got my current rating. I am a life member of the DAV.

my brother in law(he is a vet) was telling me that some states have reduced fees for hunting licenses and tags for vets.

Thanks. He has some mobility issues that he will be continue physical therapy with for a while. Hopefully, things will get better but the 2 SS rods and pins are fighting him right now.

Right now I am trying to investigate if there are "special" draw hunts that are for a veteran. If not that, maybe some ideas on hunts for a mobility impaired hunter that wants to get out there. A private land hunt could be the easiest, but the money is not there and he would like to go DIY so I am researching some areas where I can hunt with him. I have a couple areas identified based on some calls with GWs in CO but there very narrow focused in what they will give you.

Any idea which states or how you go about getting the reduced tag fee? I looked at CO and WY and nothing jumped out at me. I'll look again though.

Thanks. I passed along the info to my brother about the DAV.
