My credit card just got hit in Utah. My wife and I both applied for muzzleloader mule deer in the San Juan Elk Ridge area, so one of us drew that tag. The unit looks good on "paper" and has very high hunter success. We had low points (I had 5 points and my wife had 2) and it looked like a good place to apply. Another reason we applied there is that I am in the max point pool for the early rifle elk tag, so if we drew deer first it would give us some scouting time for a future elk tag. I should draw elk within the next 5 years. If you have hunted this unit and are willing to share some info to get us pointed in the right direction for our deer hunt, I would greatly appreciate it.

I drew the San Juan archery elk tag and will be scouting some where in the area. I am not sure where i will be hunting as I have not been there yet. If I run across any big bucks i will let you know.

Permission issues aside, the area around Monticello is a general season unit and the fields east and north of town are, for the most part, in CWMU units.

U H,
You drew a great tag !
I've hunted the Abaho Mtn./Blue Mtns. evry year since 1996. This is the first time in 30 yrs. I didn't apply for a hunt in Ut.
You are right next to them. The breeding grounds. The quality of the bucks and numbers have gone down in that area
but I don't think you have anything to worry about. I'm sure you will see some nice bucks in San Jaun/Elk Ridge unit.
I've drawn The Book Cliffs Roadless deer hunt in 2004 and believe it or not, drew 1 of 2 Book Cliffs Roadless elk hunts at the Sportsman's Convention in 2009 ! I'm banking pts. for a San Jaun Elk Ridge deer hunt myself ! Have 6 now I believe. Drew The Book's tag with 6 pts...
Hope you or your wife drop a monster. Sept.. Awesome time to be in the woods !

We are looking forward to it! I've been working up a load for my muzzleloader and just got an Aimpoint scope for my b-day that will be mounted on it for the hunt. Should be a good shooting set-up.

I have owned muzzle loaders for years but hardly ever shoot them and have never killed any thing with one.
Would like to one day. Have applied for a few hunts but not drawn . You drew a dandy !
I haven't talked to you for a year or so !

We are leaving on Sunday for my wife's muzzleloader mule deer hunt on the San Juan/Elk Ridge. We have two core areas identified, one on the north end of Elk Ridge, the other on the south end. Has anybody been in there in the last few weeks during the archery or early rifle elk hunt? If so would you be willing to share what you have seen for deer.

Good Luck Ump ! Hope she knocks down a wall hanger ! I didn't hunt the Abaho Mtn. area this year so I can't tell you. First time since 1996 and first time not hunting Utah since 1983. Was a good call for me though. I love that area. Has gone down hill a little but still one of the best places to find a big buck and the best time of the year to hunt ! Bet you see some big bull elk in there.... :)
