Has anyone ever hunted the San Juan-Abajo Mountains in south eastern Utah? I drew this tag for the general season and can't wait till October. I know some of the country there is steep and goes down to the high desert. If you've hunted this area, how was it and would you hunt it again? Thanks and good luck this season!

It is pretty steep up high and thick down low. It is beautiful country with a mix of easy access and areas you have to work for. We weren't overwhelmed with the number of deer during the muzzleloader hunt in 2010 but managed to kill a 20" 2x4 (my buddy's first big game animal). I'd have to be pretty tag poor to spend the $$ on a general deer tag in Utah these days but as far as general hunts go it's average. If nothing else it's fun to see 300"+ bulls every day.

I hunt it every year (archery) although I have never hunted the rifle hunt. There are some decent bucks around, but you'll have to work for them! Usually by the time the rifle hunt rolls around these bucks have been chased pretty hard and are close to thick stands of timber. Good luck!

Thanks for the info. I'm trying to put a game plan together as far as studying maps and what people have to say about the area before October.

I drew an archery elk tag for the San Juan area and will be scouting somewhere in the area. Will let you know if I see any big bucks.

How did the hunt go? Success? If so, please post pics. We're always hopeful for those with the luck to get a tag.

Sorry it took me a while to get back on here, but I wasn't able to go hunting this year. Couldn't make it due to family reasons. However, I will be hoping for a hunt this year.
