Have you ever played any of the money lotteries?
Thats comparing apples to oranges IMO.
In my eyes, I see the state taking away opportunity from those hunters who are in line (and have been for years), and giving a chance to those who have the extra cash on hand to buy a ticket for a chance to draw a tag. Further taking away from the average man (standing in line) and monetarizing the big game tags in the west. I just literally cannot see it any other way. Thank God the entire drawing isn't run in this fashion, or only the rich would draw a tag. Bottom line is that I feel that there are far too many tags going to the expo.
I do appreciate the fact that they donate the proceeds back to wildlife, but let's be honest, I'm envisioning that only a small portion of the proceeds actually hit the ground in any meaningful benefit to wildlife. With that amount of money, it is (and has been) ripe for corruption.
If they want to have a raffle to raise money, they should have a money raffle and not play hide and go seek with big game tags that people have waited a lifetime for. The whole optics of it looks bad from where I (and many others sit) sit.
If you followed the money with a microscope, you would likely see that I am, in part, correct with some of my assumptions. I don't have the time to do that...All I can do is express my distaste for the situation as a point holder who applies yearly for a lot of those very tags that are being sold to the "lucky line cutters". And I mean that with the most respect to anyone who partakes in the drawing.
That is all.
