unit 67 third rifle Colorado

I've hunted the Gunnison basin several times. The word I got in 2012 was that Unit 67 was coming back the best of the Gunnison basin units, not that 67 was fully back, but was the best on it's way to recovery.

The draw in for Unit 67 3rd season was as follows:

2010: 8.5% with 6 points
2011: 16.7% with 7 points
2012: 83.3% with 9 points
2013: 50% with 11 points

I read through the statistics page on cdow Web site again and I'm still coming up with 12 points to draw last year? Not sure what I'm doing wrong. Do you know exactly how many tags were given to non residents? I thought it was 9

I'm pulling the stats off of Hunter's Trailhead. They are claiming 11 tags went to non-residents in 2013.

It looks like you can draw with 11. 12 would have guaranteed the tag.

66 is coming back pretty good too although some of it can be contributed to migrating deer off 67. The East side of 67 still isn't doing that well but that side got hammered a lot harder.

Pack mule I've heard the same thing. So much so that as a resident in CO I'm evaluating putting in for unit 67 3rd season this year. Not familiar with the unit and it would be my first dive in for a trophy muley. Point creep is making it a hard choice though as I know the points I have saved will be worth more than points gathered later down the road if I spend em this year.

Is scouting a challenge in this unit with the migratory patterns or does a first time chaser DIY public guy have a good shot at a 180+? Appreciate any insights.

There's a decent shot at it bc it's a premium tag. Scouting helps out a lot and it can be done without ever leaving a rd if it's done during the 2nd/3rd season split. I wouldn't put much faith in late summer scouting.

Good advice packmule. I saw some deer in the sage recently, well November, none were shooters. I am confident I can find a 190 plus in unit 67. I have scouted it 4 times and hunted it once. I sure left some good ones there. This should be an easy hunt so don't make it unnecessarily hard.

Reliable hunter gave me location of 200, I found my own 190 the evening before season opened. hunted him hard and later that day I saw his does too late for me.

It got unreal after that snow storm came in the last cpl days of the season.

Was that 200 the "reliable hunter" informed you of a big, wide 4pt (guess 5pt if you count brow tines) typical?

Do you think 67 is a better choice than 66? 66 seems a little harder to draw, but they are right next to each other.

From what I've heard 66 is a little better, more public land in 66 also. I personally would put in for 66 if I had the points.

It's supposed to be better, I haven't really seen anything to justify it.

I'm sitting on 8 NR points and am leaning towards 67 2nd season for this years hunt. How's the hunting during 2nd season? I've been doing a lot of research in a couple units, and I keep going back and wanting to do this hunt. Any info for 2nd season?

I've only been in 67 during muzzy season, but the success numbers for 2nd season seem pretty good. I think cdow reported 75-80 % kill last year.

It's a "100%" unit with a rifle if you don't really care what you're shooting......and is what tends to happen as the season winds down. So I wouldn't really say the success rate reflect quality, only a handful will shoot that.

I have been putting in for 67 for the last couple of seasons after switching my plans on hunt units. Went into this year's draw with 11 points and didn't draw. Maybe next year!!!! Want to get out next summer and scout but it sounds like that might be a waste of time during summer months???

Brian, I ended up drawing my tag with 13 points this year. My dad and my self will be hunting the 3rd season.

If you pm me after the hunt I can let you know what we saw. I have been told that scouting in the summer won't help much other than learning the area and good access points. Most of the deer you will see in the 3rd season don't summer there.

Holly cow 13 points.. When I drew the yag back in 2007 it took 8 points.. It is a great tag but I don't know if it is worth 13 years of building points. It would be interesting to see how the unit has recovered after the bad winter of 07/08. I wish you luck.

As of now, my buddy who drew is turning his tag in. No weather and not going to chance it with his points. There'll still be 1 from our group hunting though.
