I am new to this site but was wondering if anyone out there could help me with some information. I have recently put in for my 3rd pref point. I was curious if a guy stood a chance to pull a tag with 3 pref point (non resident) for unit 39 or unit 40 on the west side of the Big Horns. It would be an any elk non resident archery tag. Thank you in advance.

Welcome! You have obviously not done much research on the G&F website because all you need to do is look in the Draw Odds Section to answer your question. I just did that for you and found the following information. Both units have archery only tags (referred to as A/O) along with the regular Type 1 either sex tags and the latter are good only for the October rifle season. The Regular Draw for 39-9 (A/O) took 7PPs, and 40-9 (A/O) took 6PPs. I didn't look up the odds for the higher priced Special Draw, but it will take less PPs to draw in that one. However, it is also costs a lot more money to apply for that draw. That is the only way you'll stand a decent chance using PPs to hunt either of those units in the near future. There is always the chance to draw a tag in the Random Draw that everyone who doesn't draw in the initial draw goes into for a second chance and it doesn't use PPs, so everyone has a chance at those few tags.

Unless they recently changed it, I don't think you can archery hunt with an Area 39 or 40 Type 1 license.

For whatever reason, there's a handful of areas where you can only bowhunt with a Type 9. 38, 39 and 40 come to mind.

I'm no archer though so don't take my word for it.

You are correct and thanks for bringing my mistake up on the thread. Units 38, 39, and 40 do not allow archery hunting on the type 1 tags. You have to draw the Type 9 A/O tag to hunt in September with archery equipment in those units. I will edit that post so nobody reads incorrect information. Thanks!

Yes I would be looking at a type 9 archery hunt.

Topgun- Thank you for taking the time to report your research. Yes I did take a look at the states site however I could not make much of all the numbers. Basically if I take what you told me I do not stand much of a chance until I have 6-7 pref points? What is the random draw that you made mention of? I will take some time and do a little research on it also.

Thanks for sharing the knowledge.

Wyoming has a 75%/25% split in the available licenses for a unit with 75% going into the draw where PPs are used and 25% where no PPs are used. Besides that the tags are then split again with 60% going into the Regular PP Draw and 40% going into the higher priced Special Draw. After those PP Draws are held with everyone in them they then hold the Random Draw for everyone that didn't draw in the PP ones. That gives you a second chance to draw a tag, but there are very few available in that draw when you're talking about the small number issued in the Type 9 tag situation to begin with. If you want to hunt in the next couple years, your best bet is to apply for a General Tag that's good for about 50 units all over the state. That can be drawn with 1 or 2 PPs and then you would just buy the $30 Archery permit and you could hunt the earlier archery seasons in any of those General units.

I thought Type 1 tag holders could begin to archery hunt after September 15th in Areas with a Type 9 tag. Is this not true for the areas in question?

Units 38, 39, and 40 do not allow archery hunting on the Type 1 tag like most of the other units do. I'm glad he caught my mistake because I usually foget that those three units are the exception in that the Type 1 tag is only good for the rifle season in October. You can verify this by clicking on the WGFD Regulations and then click on the elk hunting seasons. Then scroll way down to the Special Archery Season Section and you'll see those three units are left out in the list that show units and dates for the Type 1 tags. You can hunt with any weapon during the rifle seasons on a Type 1 tag though.
