Wondering how many years preference it should take to draw in either of these units? Just bought my first point this year and trying to get a group together (3 or so) to go. Any better units suggested?

With point creep, I'm gonna guess you are 10 years or so away from Unit 7, if you plan to get enough points first. Unit 7 is great if you pay for a private land guided hunt. Used to be a fantastic public land hunt, but the word is out and there's lots of pressure. Unit 117 I know nothing about, I would be surprised if its in the top 20 or 25 units.

Thanks for the reply. From eastern SD and looking for units that look ok that aren't completely on the west side of the state. Little cheaper travel expense and more time hunting. Really need to subscribe to the magazine and get the low down on the better units. Any units on the eastern half of wyoming that stand out?

Mr.G There is decent elk hunting in General units in the eastern half. You have time to research but with one point you can be hunting elk next fall...

Not terribly concerned with getting out there next year. Have plans for a deer hunt already. Just wondering if there's anything with a decent chance of drawing in a few years. General tags could be the thing for our group (2 guys so far maybe a 3rd) when the time comes.

What area are you deer hunting?

It took me 9 pp to draw a unit 7 tag this year so by time you get there if may well be several more points needed. General tag units south of Jackson can be a good hunt if you get away from the roads.

I'll bite here too....what's point creep?
Point creep is basically the points needed to draw a tag increase every year because people with more points than you put in for certain units. Also if they reduce the tags for a unit but it is still a high demand unit that is on a lot of people's radar that creates point creep to. Less tags + high demand = more points to be needed to draw tag. First year I put in to draw a certain unit it took 6 points (6 years of buying a point basically) this year I had 9 points and that same unit took 16 points. It keeps creeping. Basically some of these units a non-resident may never catch. I know I didn't explain it as good as some of the other guys will but maybe I helped a little.

116 in the Northern Black Hills is general, but its pretty popular, so lots of people go there. With Cook Lake and roads around that area closed it will be a little harder to get around, so success rates might be lower and there might be plenty of elk the next couple of years. I don't know if that helped at all. I don't know a lot about 117 either, and it isn't very far from me. Some of those grassland type areas are really good like the Rochelle Hills (113?) and Fortification (2), but 117 I haven't heard much about. Chances of drawing those other two units are not good.

Point creep is the increase of points needed to draw over the years... Basically it may take 9 points in 2014 and 12 points in 2017. For harder to draw units some of those with full points won't draw an area and will carry their full points into the next years draw.

Well, I took a different way back from our elk unit today, and Crook County Walk-in Area 5 is an antlerless, late season area. It is a bunch of hay fields that probably get elk in the winter if that is of any interest.
