Truck Rental in Denver

I will be flying into Denver, renting a truck, then driving up to Wyoming for an antelope hunt in late September. This will be my first time hunting out west, and was hoping you guys could provide some guidance regarding the truck rental in Denver.

First, is my best bet just to rent a truck from one of the major rental car companies at the airport?

Second, will I have a hard time finding a truck to rent that is 4x4? I figured that most trucks for rent in Denver would probably be 4x4 but I'm just guessing.

Finally, should I be fine with just a 4x4 truck in late September in Wyoming antelope country, or do I have to worry about snow and think about getting chains.

Any advice would be appreciated.

I would suggest that you contact the car rental agency and find out what they have available. On a truck, don't expect a 4x4 but their SUV's just may have 4 wheel drive.

Just do a Google search on Denver, Co airport car rentals.

On the chain question, I would want to have them with me if I went off of pavement but the vehicle rental could have some restrictions on them.

Good Luck.

They have them but you might need to prearrange the details if you want to rent a truck.

Just showing up and saying that you want a 4x4 truck to take out into the boonies just might not work.

I rent in Denver a few times a year. You can usually take a vehicle on county gravel roads but the fine print will tell you no off-roading.

A bigger problem is that no one will guarantee 4WD vs 2WD. It just depends on the inventory that day. You might end up having to call various locations to see what they have and you'll have to rent off the airport, so you'll be taking a cab, Uber or public transportation on both ends.

Be prepared to pay a minimum of $60/day with fees.

If you can find a Jeep that might be better as they come with mud tires instead of highway tires.

There are some 2 and 4 door wranglers on here: https://turo.com/ If they won't meet you at the airport there's always Uber.

It's more likely that you'll have issues with mud than snow, but anything's possible. A tow strap would be a good investment.

Back in 2012 we did the same thing. Flew into Denver, rented a truck, then drove to South east part of Wyoming to hunt elk. We had the truck for roughly 13 days. I ended up getting a good deal from Enterprise Rent-a-car (6900 tower rd). But I had to do some shopping around before I landed on Enterprise. It cost me about $558 for 13 days. If you get a 2wheel drive vehicle you would still be ok pending the area you are hunting. But if you can get a 4x4 vehicle for the same cost then I would definitely do it. The sooner you reserve a truck the better chances you have of getting a 4x4.
Don't worry too much about snow if you are hunting sept 15th thru the 25th Granted it could still snow during that time but I've hunted WY 3 out of the last 4 years, its snowed on us only one year. And the snow was on the 29th of sept and then very bad on the 4th/5th October. Don't go and buy chains until after you see the weather during the time that you plan on hunting.

Do you have any idea how long I've been looking for something like this? Wow! For guys who live a long ways away and prefer to fly out, this puts them into a 4wd vehicle

Note that prices vary a lot and almost everyone has mileage restrictions like 100/day or 1,000/week.

Thanks for all the info guys. I'll be flying in at around 10m so I think I might be limited to airport location car rental companies because everything else will be closed. Regardless, I'll try to do some more research.

All of the big rental companies at the airport , have shuttle bus service. I have rented from enterprise with no problems. I reserved a 4x4 pick up each time. One time they did not have it they gave me a 4x4 SUV.
It is convenient to rent right from the airport.

I will say book WELL in advance at the Denver airport. We threw together a scouting trip kinda last minute a couple weeks ago. We got roundtrip airfare real cheap from Houston but then the damn car was $525 for 4 days!

Enterprise had the best rate and it was and AWD, smaller vehicles were not really any cheaper. That may just be during the summer/winter when it's peak travel time.

I have had friends/family try and book a car at DIA over the past year and on many short notices no one has cars left to rent. It's one of the busiest airports in the country now and prices are starting to reflect.
Yep, everyone was out, glad we had a reservation.

Oh one other tip. I did mine thru orbitz then we changed our flights. I called enterprise to get it changed and the idiots at the local Denver counter just kept telling me "we are in a sold out condition, we can't make changes to any existing reservations" and would do nothing to help me.

So I got on orbitz, made a new reservation for the new times, cancelled my old reservation and didn't have any problems.

It seems like customer service is such a lost art these days. I go out of my way to let people know when a company has great customer service, used to be that was the norm and you let everyone know when someone screwed up. :(

In that vane, Charter Arms in Shelton Ct went out of their way with some old time customer service. I had a pathfinder revolver that the screw holding the button to open the gate broke off . I was going to drop off to have them repair. I walked into the office at brake time with my lab. They had 4 golden retrievers and a lap dog. They invited me to sit at the table. While they gave Ben water and then the dogs had a play date in the office they repaired my revolver. They handed me my revolver fix, and did not charge me a dime....
Can't say enough about the customer service i received. Great company!

Agreed I'm finding it easier, cost effective and a ton quicker to do everything for traveling online. I've stopped calling due to always reaching a human who was not qualified or proficient at picking up the phone and conducting a well though out helpful conversation. Off the soap now :)

A few years ago when my wife and I spent a month in Hawaii for our 50th anniversary, I went thru a travel agent for everything except the house we rented (thru VRBO). I had a specific request for the vehicle we rented. It was reserved a couple of months in advance and when I got to Maui, it was waiting, exactly as I specified. Cost a little more, but I DID GET exactly what I wanted, down to the make, model & color!

Worth a try...............
