After 15 years, my Dad and I were able to pull the Trout Creek rifle tag this year. We are really excited.

I have been over to the mountains already one time this summer, and we will be going again over labor day to do some more scouting.

If anybody has been on this rifle hunt in the past few years, I would love to be able to converse with you.

If you are offended by the fact that I am asking for information but I don't post a lot on here (and when I do I am sometimes asking for help) then I suppose I understand that too. However, you should know that I do most of my communication by way of PM and I have reached out to help others when I have something available to offer. In addition, I do take the time to thank and provide feedback to those that have provided information to me.

Again, if you have hunted this tag in the past few years, I would appreciate being able to talk to you about your experience. Feel free to email or PM me.

Thanks,

Bigbull

Have not hunted that unit, but have hunted quite a bit just north of your hunt area. What we found was deer in spots. Once we ID'd a few spots we noticed some similarities. In this case a key was Mt. Mahogany/Bitterbrush (I think, know it by sight not name so much) within reasonable distance of water. Then we scouted for habitat and found deer fairly regularly. Not sure of the exact plant communities in Trout Creek, as I have only driven by it on the north end. But paying attention to any common attributes of the terrain/feed, where we found deer, did pay dividends for us in that hi desert country.

I've never hunted it for Mule deer but I've hunted with an old trapper that hunted it before it was popular. As the Trout Creeks became more and more popular he moved to the rougher stuff like Oregon Canyon. I know he did well but it was a long time ago. Most people I hear from don't do as well as they hoped. I've always wanted to try the Oregon Canyon but never will now as I dumped my 8 points on the Metolius muzzy. I few more years and I could have had the Trouts. I may go to the traditional bow hunt just so I can experience it. I know that's not much help but that my 2 cents. Let me know how it goes.

The Trout Creek Hunt turned out pretty solid.

I did not recieve much info. from fellow Eastmans forum members. I guess I don't make enough meaningless posts on here to get my post count up so I am one of the group......laffin.

To those that did reach out, I will send you PMs with more info. and pics. Thanks!

Glad someone here had some info to share, not many get to go on that hunt. Congrats on your success.

Exactly. Not many get the opportunity to hunt the Trouts, hence not many replies. I don't even know anyone who has rifle hunted them. I too have been considering traditional bow hunting them. We would all like to see your photos.

Glad you had a good hunt. TS and BB are spot on, IMO, relative to lack of info you got, I only know one guy that hunted that area, 30+ years ago. Look forward to seeing the pictures and details.

My dad hunted there in 1977 I didn't think any info I could gather up would be currant enough. A expect few things have changed in the last 39 years.

I don't post much either but.... I also don't have issues with no one answering me on a limited entry tag of I think less than 50 per year and then be upset at the forum about it!! Most guys on this site would have offered you information if they had any and you complaining about it makes you look bad!! Just my opinion...some of these guys may not forget your comments and will not share info with you for this kind of reaction in the future!

Seeing this poor attitude about sharing pics and stories on a lot of forums lately. Some of us would just like to see and read about your success. Sorry if we didn't have info to share with you. I've never stepped foot in the trout creeks

Wildcountry/Andrew,

My attitude is a result of previous posts made by other members in the past when I have reached out for more information. Honestly, I think it is really lame when someone scolds a newer member for asking for information. Exchanging information is what these sites are for, and it is a primary reason as to why I and others use them. I think this is probably the case for most serious hunters. Anyway, none of that really matters at this point.

I try and be very reciprocal with those that have attempted to help me in any way. I always let them know how my hunt went, and I will also answer any questions they might have about my hunt area. In addition, I try and reach out to anyone I see asking about an area I have previously hunted. However, I typically do this by PM.

Sorry if I have offended you, but that's how I see it.

Thanks,

I'm from Oregon (35 years now) and personally know one person who has hunted the Trout Creek area and that was MANY years ago. My guess is the lack of help on this post was that there are only a few Oregon guys on the forum and even fewer that have experience in the Trouts. My experience has been, the harder a tag is to draw, the more open guys are with info.

I tend to look at the information sharing more as a result of relationship building, it takes time, requires building trust and giving more than you take. The large majority of good information I have exchanged has been through private messages with guys I have spent time to get to know. I feel these are relationships that are mutually beneficial.

Just my thoughts.

No offense taken here...I was just letting ya know a bad attitude doesn't seem to go to far on this forum! I would have given ya any info I had but couldn't offer any! Just remember there are only about 11,000 forum members and some from other countries so the chance of actually having an Oregon hunter on here that has drawn one of oregons premium tags will be rare! But like UH said, hunters seem very willing to give out info on he hard to draw tags! So I hope ya got your research and scouting in and closed the deal on a nice buck since you probably waited over a decade for that tag!

I reread the OP....15 years to draw the tag!!! I Hope ya found a 180+ deer to bring home!

UH is spot on.

Its not about post counts. However comma, scolding and or guiding/teaching as per established rules of a forum is fine IMO. There is nothing that bugs me more than someone who doesn't want to invest some time and help others. Hopping on a forum Oct 1st for a Oct 10th hunt with no intro in the new members section and asking for info that's easily researched......isn't cool and usually no good info is offered.

Glad your hunt went well. It would be nice to hear a story and or see pics as I know a lot of the members here love to see that stuff as a everyone cant hunt every year and live through others. Not to mention Trout Creek stories are few and far between.. Again, congrats.

I don't agree with everything being said regarding soliciting help, but I do agree with a good portion of it. Anyway, the general point is taken.

I am not a great story teller, but here is a brief run down of my Trout Creek hunt. Both my Dad and I had the tag. He is 64, and I am 41. I/we scouted a total of about seven days during the month of September, but the dates were split apart. The scouting was disappointing, as I did not see a single deer over about 150" while scouting. Most of the scouting was done at long distance, as I did not really want to get down in to the draws and spook anything. We were looking for deer in the 165-170 range or greater.

On opening day or day one, we started doing some real hunting and getting down in to the draws a little more. I jumped the buck in the picture that you can see standing through the brush, but I decided to pass him because I did not think he was quite what I was looking for. In total, I saw six bucks opening morning including the one I took a picture of and two other 28" + wide bucks that I saw moving at a long distance (it is possible it could have been the same buck twice). My Dad also saw a few bucks but nothing of consequence.

On days two through five, we ended up hunting for a 190" type deer that my Dad jumped on day two. Even though we hunted for this deer for four days, We never did see him again. However, I did see a 170" type deer that I could not get a shot at. We also saw a few other small bucks during this time period.

On day six (our final day to hunt because I had to get back for my son's football game), we decided it was time to give up on the 190" deer my Dad saw and return to where we were at opening morning. I split apart from my Dad before daylight and the plan was that we would work down a canyon (me on the bottom and him on the top) and meet back up at 11:00. At about 10:30 with the sun shining bright, I popped up over a finger ridge to an area of the canyon that was wide open with just a few pieces of sage and some rock out croppings. I was really surprised when I spotted a deer out in front of me about 400 yards, and I was even more surprised when I threw up the binos and saw it was a shooter buck that was walking towards me at a fast pace. I could tell instantly that he had good tines and was likely a shooter, but I needed to verify he was for sure at least a 4x4. However, there was a roll in the hillside and he was getting ready to go out of my sight picture in to a small draw where he could easily escape down to the creek. Thus, before I was 100% sure he was a 4x4, I decided I needed to take a shot quickly before he was gone. I ranged him at 313 yards, and then quickly got in the prone position. Unfortunately, the grass was too tall and thick. Scrambling for options, I got down on one knee and propped up my pack in front of me for a rest. Although I have never shot like this, I went ahead and took a quick shot even know it was uncomfortable. I heard the whack as he went down but then he got right back up. Feeling how uncomfortable the first shot was, I threw the pack aside and just shot the second shot off my knee. I again heard the whack just before he tumbled out of my sight picture. I immediately walked quickly over to where he was, and saw him laying about 100' from where he vanished out of my sight picture. I felt confident that he met my minimum standards of 165", and then I was pleasantly surprised when he grossed out at 178 and 7/8" (see attached field photo). Shortly after, I met up with my Dad and he told me that he passed up a close shot on abut a 160" deer. I then packed the deer out to the closest road while my Dad walked back to get the truck and drove it around to the road. I cut all the meat off the bone before packing it out. Because I already had a pack full of stuff, it took me two trips to get the buck and all my gear out. If I did not have to make a very steep climb, I may have been able to get everything out in one load.

The three biggest bucks we saw on this trip were all jumped or pushed out of their beds. Even though we spent many hours glassing, I think most of the bigger bucks were not even standing during day light hours. There was a 185" buck with an amazingly big frame killed in the same area I killed mine, and it was also jumped out of it's bed.

Trout Creek Buck.jpgTrout Creek - Buck in Brush.jpgAll in all, I think it was a pretty decent hunt. I wished my Dad could of got what he was looking for, but he seemed to be happy with the way things turned out. He said he enjoyed just seeing the big 190" deer.
