I am pretty disappointed in the Republican party because of this. Paul Ryan's plan to balance the budget calls for a sell off of millions of acres of BLM and NF. I wrote the same guys I voted for frequently to remind them that the majority of the hunting population votes for the Republican party and it would be wise to remember who helps them get elected. This is a disgusting example of political corruption where the politicians return favors to special interest groups for campaign donations. Keep up the good fight guys.
I am also a longtime republican who is unhappy with their stand on transferring federal lands. I wish I knew more about the position of each of the presidential candidates on this issue. So far, I have heard only one talk about it. On Fox News, Rand Paul stated that federal lands should be privatized or at least turned over to the states.

In my opinion, this could/should be a major issue in the upcoming presidential race. Anyone know where the other candidates stand?

I to am a bit disappointed. It wouldn't be so much of a issue if there was a guarantee that these lands would not or couldn't be sold after the transfer of these lands. I don't think this guarantee clause would ever happen. And yes it should be a issue in 2016.

After doing a little more research, I found the following article about the position of two presidential candidates on the transfer/sale of federal lands. The story does not necessarily focus on presidential candidates but it does mention that two of them, Rand Paul and Ted Cruz, are in favor of transfer/sale:

Be careful where you get your news. I wouldn't go to thinkprogress.com to learn the facts about the virtues of conservative GOP candidates any more than I would go to an Islamic website to learn about Jews.

I don't want the lands to be sold either but websites like that have serious biases and liberal agendas.

I agree we need to be careful of the source. The problem is there is very little information out there regarding the position of the candidates on this issue. As for Rand Paul, I personally heard him say on Greta Van Susteren that "federal lands should be privatized or at least transferred to the states".

Anyone heard anything about the stand of any of the other presidential candidates on this issue?

I just received this email from Backcountry Hunters and Anglers, an organization of which I am a member. Apparently our senators are voting today on the federal budget. Several amendments are being proposed that call for the sale of federal land to help balance the budget. I have already made my phone calls to my two senators. I encourage you to do the same.

Take Action: Votes Today on the Sale of Public Land

Backcountry Hunters & Anglers, a national organization representing more than 100,000 hunters and anglers around the country, is asking for your help to defend against attacks currently underway as senators in Washington, D.C., finalize their budget for Fiscal Year 2016. A "vote-a-rama" is taking place today to consider numerous amendments that have poured in from both sides of the political aisle.

Sportsmen have some urgent priorities to tackle together if we are to uphold our public lands hunting and fishing traditions. Before voting begins today, please take a moment to contact your senators' offices to express your strong opposition to budget amendment 838. Introduced just last night by Sen. Lisa Murkowski, the costly provision would enable the sale and/or transfer of federal public lands, including national forests, wilderness areas, national wildlife refuges, historical sites and other important conservation lands, for the purpose of balancing the budget. Sen. Mike Lee is levying a similar attack. His senate amendment 747 proposes selling federal public lands to reduce the federal deficit. If passed, these measures could permanently affect our ability to access and enjoy our public lands and waters. We need to stop them in their tracks.

Our national public lands support a thriving and sustainable $90 billion annual hunting and angling economy and a $646 billion annual outdoor recreation economy. To sell or transfer these lands would mean a profound loss of access and opportunity for America's 40 million hunters and anglers, not to mention dire consequences for the fish and wildlife that depend on intact migratory corridors and healthy habitat.

We are not without allies and champions in the Senate, however. Following a robust fly-in earlier this week, which BHA orchestrated to bring sportsmen from around the country to Washington, D.C., Sen. Martin Heinrich introduced amendment 1024, which precludes the sale of any public lands to reduce the federal deficit and has bipartisan support. This amendment is just the kind of leadership we are looking for in Congress, and it's important that we not only recognize Sen. Heinrich but also encourage other senators to vote in support of his amendment.

Few issues galvanize sportsmen like the issue of supporting public ownership of public lands, a sentiment that is reflected in this letter, signed by more than 100 national, regional, and state-based sportsmen's organizations, opposing the transfer/sale of public lands. Our system of widely accessible multiple use public lands is the envy of the world and we need all of you to help us protect this legacy.

Call your Senator and ask them to:

Vote NO on Senator Murkowski's Amendment #838

Vote NO on Senator Lee's Amendment #747

Vote YES on Senator Heinrich's Amendment #1024

Call the capitol switchboard at 202-224-3121 and ask to be connected to your Senator.

Thank you in advance for joining us in this important fight,

Together we will carry the day.

Onward and Upward,

Land Tawney

Yesterday, the United States Senate passed Alaska Senator Lisa Murkowski's amendment No. 838 to the budget on a 51 to 49 vote. While the amendment appears to have little immediate impact, it "positions" the budget for future land sales or transfers. It also expresses the "will" of the senate.

Amendment No. 838

(Purpose: To establish a spending-neutral reserve fund relating to the
disposal of certain Federal land)

At the appropriate place, insert the following:

SEC. ___. SPENDING-NEUTRAL RESERVE FUND RELATING TO THE
DISPOSAL OF CERTAIN FEDERAL LAND.

The Chairman of the Committee on the Budget of the Senate
may revise the allocations of a committee or committees,
aggregates, and other appropriate levels in this resolution for one or more bills, joint resolutions,
amendments, amendments between the Houses, motions, or
conference reports relating to initiatives to sell or
transfer to, or exchange with, a State or local government
any Federal land that is not within the boundaries of a
National Park, National Preserve, or National Monument, by
the amounts provided in such legislation for those purposes,
provided that such legislation would not raise new revenue
and would not increase the deficit over either the period of
the total of fiscal years 2016 through 2020 or the period of
the total of fiscal years 2016 through 2025.

Thanks for the list HPD, It seems that both my Senators, Barrasso & Enzi voted for this. That's what they basically told me in response to an e-mail that I sent to each of them. If you don't like it, join a group and protest...or something along those lines. In their minds it's the best thing for Wyoming. I'm sure they mean Ranchers and the Energy industry...and to hell with Sportspeople. Like I said before, the Democrats want your guns and the Republicans want to take away the lands to use them.

That is really disappointing about Daines.

I really thought he would vote the will of his constituency, but it is apparent he toed the party line instead.

Tester, on the other hand, HAS broken from his party's platform to support his constituency, as evidenced by his authoring the federal lands concealed carry expansions.

Here is an update I just received from Backcountry Hunters and Anglers regarding yesterday's passage of amendment No. 838:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

March 27, 2015

Senate Votes in Favor of Public Lands Seizure, Drawing Criticism from Sportsmen
Budget amendment enabling sale, transfer of federal public lands passed yesterday in a 51-49 Senate vote

MISSOULA, Mont. - Following a flurry of votes during last night's budget deliberations in the U.S. Senate, Backcountry Hunters & Anglers sharply criticized the passage of a measure that would enable the sale or transfer of federal public lands, including national forests, wilderness areas, wildlife refuges and other places relied up by sportsmen and outdoor recreationists.

SA 838, introduced by Sen. Lisa Murkowski and passed in a 51-49 vote, would support and fund state efforts to take possession of federal public lands.

"Public lands are the fabric that binds America together, and last night's vote by the Senate sends an alarming message to sportsmen and -women - along with every citizen who values our publicly owned resources," said BHA Executive Director Land Tawney. "Nationally, an organized, concerted movement is underway to sell off and limit access to America's public lands and waters. These are not merely the actions of a lunatic fringe. Now is the time to double down and fight back against this ill-conceived idea."

While SA 838 was strongly opposed by some Western senators, the final tally of votes was not without surprises. Sen. Susan Collins changed her vote at the 11th hour to pass SA 838. Another noteworthy "yes" vote came from Sen. Steve Daines, who just last month tweeted during a speech to the Montana legislature, "We must stand firm against any efforts to sell our public lands."

"Sportsmen offer thanks to Senate members who stood firm against this shortsighted proposal," continued Tawney. "Senators Corey Gardner, Kelly Ayotte and Lamar Alexander, along with many of their senate colleagues, voted against SA 838 and demonstrated their support of our American public lands. We look forward to working with them to maintain open access and continued public ownership of these irreplaceable public resources."

Another measure focused on public lands failed to get a vote during the Senate's "vote-a-rama." SA 1024, introduced by Sen. Martin Heinrich, was intended to quash ongoing efforts by some interests to sell federal public lands and waters as a budget-tightening measure.

"While we are disappointed it was never offered a vote, Backcountry Hunters & Anglers thanks Senator Heinrich for acting in the interests of American sportsmen by introducing this measure," concluded Tawney. "Our hunting and angling traditions are steeped in our public lands that serve as the scenic backdrop for our most treasured memories. Thoughtful actions like Senator Heinrich's hold the key to upholding these opportunities for our kids and grandkids to enjoy."

Man,

I don't know what to think. Just when I think the GOP in MT wants more public land for the state (that is what the "transfer" would do, right?), they go and do this:

http://billingsgazette.com/news/government-and-politics/house-gop-defunds-fwp-habitat-programs/article_cc4d9d5f-2556-54c6-b115-3aecdb8ef459.html

WTH?

I don't know what is going on with this session in MT. That is some blatantly anti-hunter stuff there. I hope the senate can straighten this out. Those funds can't be used to do anything else, and the budget is already balanced. This would strictly prevent efforts at increasing public access and habitat improvements.

Really disappointing.

I'm with you Matt, sportsmen and women better wake up and realize they voted these people in. The only comforting news is that we have a Gov. in Steve Bullock who sees right through this BS and isn't afraid to stop this madness.
