Yes, the precedent has been set for states to sell off land. Especially when things get tight with state budgets.
Got ya, thanks! I don't think any state land has sold in Minnesota, we keep gaining more due to tax issues like tax deaded lands. But I can see them selling it if they get in a bind. I see it making more sense out west where they could sell huge tractsvof land to outfitters or celebs with lots of money, we don't have that here. Smaller pieces of land that is.

Yikes,

I see what you mean, HPD:

I don't think it is fair to paint the broad brush to all Republicans, though, as many have spoken up in opposition to transfer and sale of federal lands. I congratulate Montana's own Ryan Zinke for it.
In my opinion Ted Cruz would be the worst possible choice for president if you are a sportsman. Rand Paul would have been bad too, but it looks like his campaign is in the tank.

I agree we shouldn't paint all Republicans with the same brush, but at the national level the GOP has passed a resolution in favor of transfer (as has the Wyoming GOP). So I am going to assume any Republican candidate is in favor of transfer unless he/she says different. The only Republican presidential candidate to object to transfer is Trump. All of the remaining Republican presidential candidates are on the transfer band wagon.

Here's is where I am at: I WANT to vote Republican and I am going to do everything I can to find state, local and national Republican candidates that will oppose transfer and do my best to change the position of the entire party on the issue. The only other option is to vote Democrat and I am not sure I can do that especially at the national level (there may be some local Democrats that I would consider).

The only way to change the GOP position on this issue is to turn public opinion against them. That will require getting the word out. Many of us and many outdoor organizations are trying to do just that.

I do see however that the state would sure as hell sell some land for quick money rather than if it were federal. I am definitely not for the transfer, don't get me wrong.

The issue of federal land transfer is finally getting some attention from the presidential candidates. Ted Cruz is running an ad in Nevada saying he will transfer federal lands to the state. My political instincts tell me Cruz should not be promoting transfer in a state where 52 percent are against transfer (see Colorado College poll). We will find out tonight how well that ad does for him. I hope Nevada sends him packing!!

The House Committee on Natural Resources is having a subcommittee meeting this Thursday on more sale/transfer legislation.

Another round of contact with your representatives is in order.

Here are the committee members:

Some news that doesn't bode well for Rubio and public lands:

Cruz came in third in Nevada. Not exactly a death blow, but close to it. If the transfer agenda can't win in Nevada with all its federal land, where can it win...the US Congress perhaps??

You look to a far left website like thinkprogress.org seeking facts and then post their garbage on a hunting forum? Unbelievable.
I didn't bother to take in what they were pushing, I just used it to read the link the actual bills and what they said.

I thought I might get criticized for that, but I posted it anyway because of the links it provides to other information. And I find the article to be generally accurate. Sorry if it offends you. That was not my intent.

Regardless of the source of information, it is clear bad things could be happening in Washington. I suggest we focus on that.

I just received the following email from the Wyoming Wildlife Federation:

Congressional Action Alert!

Public Land Grabs Move from States to Congress

The U.S. House of Representatives will consider three bills that would take away vast stretches of national forests and other public lands across the country. Two of the bills would impact public lands in Wyoming. The bills, which will be heard in a meeting of the House Natural Resources Committee on Thursday, represent an escalation of the political movement across the West to transfer America’s public lands to the states. Wyoming Rep. Cynthia Lummis has a seat on this committee.

Please contact Rep. Lummis today and say vote “NO” on these land grab bills. SEND EMAIL: http://lummis.house.gov/contact/ (click “public lands” under issue field, or call toll free (888) 879-3599(888) 879-3599 and leave your name and Wyoming town.

On Feb. 12, the Wyoming Legislature heard strong opposition from WWF members and other sportsmen and women who helped defeat two bills that aimed to facilitate a state take-over of public lands in Wyoming. Please email or call Rep. Lummis today.

We must work TODAY to stop this congressional attempt. Here are the bills:

· (HR 3560) Rep. Don Young from Alaska (R), would allow any state to seize control and ownership of up to 2 million acres of national forests within its borders — an area nearly the size of Yellowstone National Park. A state would then be able to auction off the lands to private ownership or for mining, logging, and drilling.

· (HR 2316) Rep. Raul Labrador (R-ID), would give states and counties the right to take direct control of up to 4 million acres of national forests across the country for clear-cut logging, without regard to environmental laws and protections.

· (HR 4579) Rep. Chris Stewart (R-UT), would turn over what the Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance estimates to be 6,000 miles of road right-of-ways on U.S. public lands to counties in Utah, opening the door for road construction and development in protected Wilderness areas.

I just sent Cynthia Baby an e-mail. I don't know where she stands on the transfer issue, but I know Wyoming's senators, Barrasso and Enzi are 100% for this. But then both are bitches to campaign donors that OWN them.
