Currently a 50lb bama longbow is my traditional setup. I also have a 60lb montana longbow. The arrows I shoot are laminated birch arrows I made with 160 grain two blade broadheads. I have killed a whitetail doe with it my first year, and a spot and stalk turkey from 2 yards. The thing I do like about the wood arrows is that they are heavy and I shoot them good and they hit hard. What I do not like about them is they break when ever I shoot a critter. The deer I shot, the arrow broke into three pieces as well as the turkey. I'm looking into carbon arrows or aluminium. What are some thoughts are traditional arrows and set up that people have. What is a good brand of arrows for a traditional setup for hunting whitetail and muleys. thanks

hunttrap,

Love the discussion. I'm a passionate traditional archery as well as a compound archery...I just LOVE archery! I, too, like the nostalgia around wood arrows but don't like the idea of constantly breaking shafts. I like simplicity, i.e. stuff can't break! About 10 years ago I tried Gold Tip Expedition Hunter arrows and absolutely love them. I still shoot them in my Black Widow. I've also used Gold Tip Traditional shafts, which are OK for target practice, but I've noticed they aren't as durable as the Expedition Hunters.

In '17, I took a Black Widow and Bloodsport Onyx arrows up to Alaska. I didn't get to shoot anything up there, but have target practiced a lot with them and really like them as well.

That's my 2 cents. Hope it helps!

Trad archery is fun for sure my 74 year old father still hunts with a longbow. I did for about a decade in there with some sucess and also will say that the gold tips ex hunter shoots good for me and I used it in hunting situations to kill both elk as well as deer. The arrows held up well.

Shooting a compound as well now and hunt with it but starting to shoot the old longbow more again.

It's not a bad thing if those arrows break inside the body cavity, rolls those guts up pretty good in there.
I use woodies, footed shafts to be exact. Spouse uses tapered doug fir or alaska yellow cedar, taken a few elk with the woodies and breaking one is not an issue for us. Bare shafts are pretty reasonably priced except the footed ones.
We both hunt with longbows, 50 # and 55#. I use four fletch feathers and spouse 3 fletch . Both have 125 gr broadheads on the arrow.

I shoot the boring aluminum XX75s we all grew up shooting out of a 60" recurve........and always will. If I go to a longbow I will also go to wood arrows though. My opinion, but shooting man-made arrows out of a longbow would be like pouring ketchup on prime rib. LOL great thread!
