By looking over the WY NR draw odds I would say many applicants do not know how many points the units they apply for take to draw or how the draw works. There are guys that burn points on units with leftover tags, guys applying for hunts 2nd &3rd choice that have very low odds 1st choice, applying for hunts with no tags. ect.

I will give a few that I think of every year:

1. Believing that you will get winter weather and the rut will be on in CO 3rd season.

2. The amount of points it takes to draw a unit directly corresponds with quality

3. If you are hearing a mule deer unit is hot, it's too late

4. Believing that Nevada has the best system for tag allocation because you get 5 choices, everyone gets 5 choices

5. Setting your goals on a 190 buck or 370 bull just because it took 10 years to draw

6. Failing to monitor drought and moisture levels as it is way more important in trophy quality then how hard the tag was to acquire.

7. Realizing a once in a lifetime hunt isn't the same if you don't have your buddies or family there to share in the moment

8. Failing to monitor the unit that you drew once and are hunting again several years later and expecting the exact same hunt

9. Your preference point portfolio is absolutely meaningless without a plan and understanding that the game may change and you may be left with nothing but regret

10. Continuing to put off hunts until the conditions are perfect, while losing your physical ability to age

6 is a tough one just because of how early the application deadlines are. (That said, we've already met our average rainfall total for the entire year)

Applying for a Utah license to acquire preference points and bonus points because my friend (Resident of Utah) told me to then reading this old thread and wondering why I shouldn't be applying for preference points and bonus points for General and LE tags.....Priceless....

Can someone please explain this one so we can move on with this thread?

Im enjoying reading these helpful tips on here!

Ha! I just figured out today that the unit I have been applying to for the last two years for "Any deer" has an "Any whitetail" tag.

That can be drawn with no points.

I now have two.

The reason I wanted this tag is because I know where big whitetails hang out in this area.

I can't believe how many people pile up the elk points but have never hunted elk before. They think on limited hunts elk hide behind every tree. Then complain about it
