One of the main reasons I post this is to hopefully shed some light on the fact that we have a serious predator problem in the US. Not just out west, but all over the United States.

Everyone wonders why the small game and turkey population is going to crap.

When you have this mini small nest raiding predators on just one small 40 acre track of land imagine how bad the problem is over hundreds of acres.

You are spot on. We used to have a ton of pheasants here, now we have almost none. We have tons of coons, I see them all the time dead next to our rural county roads after being run over . Most people don't see them because after dark, they stay home. We also a huge population of feral cats (around here they are called barn cats). They really take a toll on newly hatched pheasants.

I seriously wish more people would at least put out a couple dog proofs at their house every year for a couple months and catch a handful of raccoons. I don’t think people understand how detrimental nest raising predators are to just about everything bird related.

You can follow the turkey population trend almost line for line with the price of fur. It’s actually quite impressive to see the correlation.

When fur prices are up, turkey populations go up. When fur prices are down, turkey populations go down. And when I mean, the trend line is almost identical, I’m not even kidding. It’s mirrored.
