Who is Billy Dixon?
He was a buffalo hunter who way back in the 1800 knocked a Comanche chief off of his horse and killed him at 1538 yards with a single shot.

The party of hunters were surrounded by upwards of 1200 Comanches. Or so the story goes.

It is a neat read. Some say that he was using a borrowed 50-90 Sharps and others say that they only had a 45-90 Sharps available

Billy Dixon was a famous Texas indian fighter who legend has it, shot one off his horse at a distance of around a mile with a black powder single shot buffalo rifle. I am an avid western history fan and compete in Cowboy Action Shooting and shoot black powder in competition.
You do realize that 1000+ yards on moa size targets is common now. There are 2 mile competitions now.

One mile off a horse with black powder is just a story. That bullet would be falling almost straight down at that range.

You need to read the story, Dixon wasn't on a horse but inside of a wall, the Comanche chief was on the horse.

And back then when hunters depended on their rifles for their lives they knew a lot more about them than a lot of shooters do now

Not too many years ago several people who questioned the shot by Dixon, got a surveyor, a ballistic specialist from the US Army and a bunch of competition 1000 yard BP shooters and did a study on the tale. The conclusion was ....yes it was possible and probably happened. Pretty well reported and covered in an edition of True West magazine.

Sorry I wasn't too clear, Jim P is right. The shot was from a place called Adobe Walls and the Indian Chief was on horseback on a bluff overlooking the fortification.

I agree. I revise all my gear lists after a trip with an AT Revised version. That wayover time I eliminate items I carry but don’t use.

I also do a what I learned section on the trip home in the rite in the rain notebook I use as a journal on each trip.

Even if I don’t reference those later often enough, actually writing it out helps me remember it.
Were you in the military? The reason I ask is I have heard every time folks in our armed services train for long range shooting, they record all of their shots. It's a lot more work, but it makes every trip to the range a learning session.

Maybe take a look at the 175 gr EDGE TLR bullet. Good BC, fairly light for a high muzzle velocity, and tough enough to hold up to the velocity
I use Sierra Bullets in my 30-06, 25-06 and .220 AI Swift. I like them and have used them for many, many years. I have several hundred 150 gr BT Game Kings that I am going to work up a deer load for my .300 Wby.

Billy Dixon was also one of the few civilians to be awarded the M.O.H. at the Buffalo wallow fight. If my memory serves me correctly he made the long shot with a 50-90 Sharp's rifle.

Last year out of curiosity I tried Weatherby's factory 150 grain partitions out of my 300 wby. I shot a ~200 lb buck at 337 yards, dropped him in his tracks, pretty devastating. I tried the 150s because this particular rifle doesn't like 180s. I had been shooting 165s out of it for years so I thought I would try 150s.

I use 180 gr Nosler Partition for elk. My rifle likes them and does great. I have a custom .300, not a Wby rifle. I have also shortened up the freebore and it shoots great.
