Take as much time as you can!! I've missed a week of high school and it's not bad. Especially during senior year, at least for me the work load was a lot less in my senior year.

Good luck Don - as long as your son can make up the school work, those two weeks in CO will be golden. I still remember when my dad took me out of school for a 10-day trip to the Blues in OR when I was in 8th grade. We lived in OK then, and my dad's partner flew us up there in his private plane (and hunted with him too). Talk about cool!

On a related note, he's a senior in high school. Maybe I was just a slacker, but I more or less coasted that year as I'd already completed most of my graduation requirements by the time my junior year was completed. I was out by 2:30 or so each day for athletics...not much book work needed for that!!

I dont understand how people can give you grief about this, i hope those people have the same attitude on home schooling....no difference in my mind. Hes your son and you know him the best, dont let others tell you how to raise your boy...do what you think is prudent, and kill a monster in colorado!

Here is my take on it. My grandpa took me elk hunting twice in Colorado when I was in school. My senior year I missed a nice bull the only elk I have ever shot at. I took my homework with me and did all of it driving across kansas. I remember those hunts and time with my grandpa. Wish he would of got an elk he really wanted one. I told him if he had a shot to take it that I would get it out if it took me all week. Take the boy hunting he's doing great in school you said and I can't think of a better senior trip. And I hope you both get a big one

OK, last year I took my youngest son out of school for a week as I bow hunted for Elk in Wyoming. He came along with a deer tag and had a blast as I called a bull right in to us and killed it. Its one of the most memorable moments I have had with him. He has talked and talked about this since then I and told him if he got good grades I would take him out west again and this time we both would elk hunt. His grades have done excellent and he is a senior in high school. We struck out in New Mexico but I am planning a OTC archery hunt in Colorado.

So here is the question

How many days would you feel comfortable taking him out of school? I have been planning two weeks since last year but I am getting some negative feedback from people and that's causing me second thoughts. He is OK as far as school policy goes. Its his last year before he heads off to College and I believe he has earned this. People are saying no more than a week but where we live there is very few people that hunt (my son knows nobody in school that hunts)

Thoughts?
Here, if he were top 10% and keeping someone out of those rankings, there'd likely be a lawsuit filed on the school for giving him credit for work during unexcused absences.

I'm a retired certificated high school teacher. Absolutely take your son out of school. Big game hunting is education that he'll never receive in a classroom.

Before you go, ask your son's school for an independent study contract that'll require your son to complete classroom assignments while he's gaining practical knowledge. He might be able to arrange for field research science extra credit. And he might be able to get extra credit for English by writing an essay about what's he's learned. Even knowledge of history applies. And, of course, math applies to everything. He can work up an equation for determine effective archery distance.

Hi packmule,

If his son receives an independent study contract, his absence will be excused before he leaves to hunt.

Take care,

BTW,

I'd bet that his son's district's Website will have info about independent study contracts.

Back from the hunt and we had a great time. It was unsuccessful as far as getting a elk with our bow. It was very successful (IMO) as getting a elk would have been icing on the cake. This hunt pushed me mentally as well a physically and I enjoyed it all. I will share the highlights and more pictures if there is any interest.
