PointsHunter's perspective is very good. I think it depends on the child's ability to make up the work on his own instead of in a classroom, any other commitments he may not be able to meet (sports, scouts, band, etc); as mentioned scholarship potential, etc..... I'm not sure what I would do. My son is 11 so I have a few years to figure it out. I sure would like for him to take advantage of the youth permits that are available. My dad took me out of school for deer season in IL but never for more than 2 days; but that was all that was needed based on season dates.

My mom pulled me out of school a few times for 2 weeks for non-hunting trips. When I grew up in Wisconsin, if you brought a deer license to school, you automatically got the Monday before Thanksgiving off. In my opinion, 2 weeks would not be a problem if he's doing well in school.

I've taken my son out of school several times for hunting trips. We have been able to work with most of his teachers and get some of his assignments up front. He takes some of his school work with him and can work on it when possible while on the hunt. Of course, it depends heavily on the kind of hunt, tent camp, cabin, etc. Even if he just keeps up on the reading, it helps and is worth it to go on the hunt. He still pulls straight A's, so it's working for him.
Mom is happy with how it works and she has a masters degree in education and used to teach!

My dad used to take me out of school for a week every year starting in the fourth grade. Then again that was about 45 years ago.
LOL

Again thanks for all the comments and suggestions.

Some great points here

I have taken him out before to hunt for 1 week at a time. He has been to New Mexico, Wyoming and now will be going to Colorado. After reading this stuff and thinking it over, looking at school policies he is coming with for two weeks. Just to far, to much to cram in on a DIY archery Elk hunt for 1 week.

I am VERY lucky to have a awesome wife who supports my hunting passion..

His teachers will more than likely give him the school work to make up. or even do it while your gone.
2 weeks for sure.
Good luck on your hunt.

I say take him hunting. If he is doing good in school then go for it. He will have those memories for ever. I know I still cherish those memories when my dad did the same with me!

When my dad was gonna take me out of school I had to have a b average, and have all the class work I was gonna have for the days I missed with me so that I could work on it when I was in camp, I always got it done the night before we left cause I didn't wanna have to worry about doing the work, but I as well cherished the days we had in the field, it was a huge step up to me being able to take off school to spend a week with my dad,

If you get meat from the store then dont criticize me for having the courage to go out and kill my own meat

My dad took me ou of school every year for a week to deer hunt. Those are great memories and I learned a lot of lessons I never would have learned in school.

Well everything is ready to go. My son got signed off and approved for taking two weeks off and we head out Saturday morning. I picked up the rental today and I am really excited. Got a new 4 door Chevy Silverado 4X4 for 18 days unlimited mileage for 635 bucks. Going to spend the day tomorrow packing and getting everything done. 3:30 am sat morning we start our drive to Colorado. Son has been shooting a bunch in the yard and hes pumped

Good luck on the hunt. Should be great memories regardless of filled tags.

Well, looks like you made a good decision. I teach, and the only problem I'd have in a situation like this is that I could not go along!

I am a teacher and obviously if I'm posting on here, a hunter as well. While I disagree with some of the above statements about learning more in those two weeks then in 3 months at school. (Sorry guys I have pride in my profession) I think what they are learning are two different things and what he gets from that trip will be different from school and a treasured memory with his father that will stick with him for ever. I am lucky to teach and live in an area of Wyoming that people travel lots of miles to get to to be able to hunt. I have kids leaving all the time this time of year. As long as I get advanced notice and the dates they are going to be gone I work my tail off to get them a packet of all their work before they leave. As a teacher I will tell you I cover a lot of ground my classroom in two weeks. As a hunter and a father myself I will tell you that if he is taking care of business in the classroom and outside of it I don't see anything wrong. Sometimes we as educators get too consumed with covering content, state testing, and our students reading scores. We forget to step back and look at the whole kid. IF he can work ahead and stay up on his work, get after it and have fun. If he feels like he is going to be buried in homework cut it back to a week or a week and 1/2. There is no easy answer to this one. Just reading your post and the fact that you are concerned about both lets me know he will be ok and you won't let him slip up on it. Happy hunting!!

Don, I have missed the first week of school 2 times in a row. They don't even enroll you until the you show up. So those absences don't even count against you.
