Not my first choice. I really don't care for the design of this broadhead. On a quartering away shot I just don't think this broadhead would perform as described with the way the blades deploy, especially on a thick skinned animal like an elk. There are just a lot better options out there to pick from.

I would just be worried that if the ferrule bent even slightly the blades would be locked in and you would be pretty much shooting them with a field point.

As far as mechanicals go this is a very very good design because you loose so much energy cutting thru the hide on a elk. Since the blades open inside you only cut a small hole going in. I don't think the ferrule is going to bend as they shoot them thru 1/2" plywood but I don't like the taper they have from tip to the ferrule as you will loose some energy due to friction. If they made a 75gr head and I had to shoot a mechanical I would be shooting them. I like the small cutting diameter fixed blades check out the QAD Exodus that just came out those look good. I went with the steelforce Phathead Titanium but also like the Rocket ultimate steel.

I know that a lot of people will use mechanicals on elk, but with the size and strength of the animal, I prefer to have one less thing go wrong. Spend the time making sure your bow is tuned properly and shoot fixed blades. You won't regret it.

+1
pick a good cut on contact strong head. WAC em makes a great head that flys really well or the G5 Montec or strikers.
