Spent a lot of the last 2 days scouting a unit that I have never hunted elk there before. I made a mistake and put the wrong unit choice for my M/L elk choice. I drew it and then realized I had a problem. Luckily it is only 60 miles north of my home place so I can spend some time scouting. This is the unit I'll be hunting during 4th season deer.

Typically the really good looking areas are private so they get eliminated. Most are large cattle operations and have outfitters hunting them. I did find a couple of promising areas that will need some more looking. One is a state wildlife area, the rest can only be accessed by hiking or 2 track trails. There is some wilderness areas too. I have my work cut out for me before season starts the 2nd week of September. One thing that is good is that it forces me out of my comfort zone into a new area.

Saw lots of deer today, but no elk as this was basically done in my truck to narrow down the area some.

Hope you didnt burn a bunch of points on the wrong unit. On the bright side you will be spending more time in the area and will be more prepared for your deer hunt regardless of how the elk hunt turns out.

The choice was a 2nd, as my first was a point. Unfortunately the area in the unit I will be hunting deer is next to the Utah border and the elk area is 50 miles to the east so can't really combine the scouting. I pretty much know where I'll be hunting deer, all I really need to do is the last couple of weeks before deer season is find my camping spot and do a little final looking.

Well, sometimes hunting is just luck. As long as you are out there, there is a chance. When I first moved to Eastern Oregon, I didn't have a clue where to hunt. Other than what looked good on Google. After many miles on the ol' Jeep, I decided on a rocky rim a short distance from a main road. Everyone passes this area up. First time in, luck was with me and I spotted a nice buck. Hard to get in on and hard to hunt. Long story short, this will be the 5th year I have tried for him. Each year I figure a rifle hunter or a cougar will take him, but he shows up every time. I did draw this unit for a rifle hunt but could not turn him up. I think he re-locates shortly after archery season. Good luck in your new unit, all is not lost.

I hunted that area last year, we camped not far from the camp ground of divide rd. we saw 3 or 4 cows hanging most off the top on and off the road that comes into the town to the north of Montrose. Sorry I can't remember the name of the town. CC, we took the road out of Montrose to the west up divide road. Good luck.

Good luck CC! I am sure you will have it figured by season opener. I know it's not what you wanated, but look at this as a new and exciting challenge. It may turn out to be a great choice!

Good luck on the hunt! While I love hunting my familiar areas, seeing new country has it's own rewards. I have no doubt you will get if figured out before the hunt gets here.

I'll be going back several times before opening day. I was talking to a neighbor a couple of days ago and found out he has hunted this area quite a bit. he gave me a few ideas that I now need to explore.
