Spent a lot of the last 2 days scouting a unit that I have never hunted elk there before. I made a mistake and put the wrong unit choice for my M/L elk choice. I drew it and then realized I had a problem. Luckily it is only 60 miles north of my home place so I can spend some time scouting. This is the unit I'll be hunting during 4th season deer.
Typically the really good looking areas are private so they get eliminated. Most are large cattle operations and have outfitters hunting them. I did find a couple of promising areas that will need some more looking. One is a state wildlife area, the rest can only be accessed by hiking or 2 track trails. There is some wilderness areas too. I have my work cut out for me before season starts the 2nd week of September. One thing that is good is that it forces me out of my comfort zone into a new area.
Saw lots of deer today, but no elk as this was basically done in my truck to narrow down the area some.
