CC....are you planning on taking me?? Just kidding, kind of!!

I haven't driven the Alaska Highway since my 20's so not much help there. Here are some things we enjoyed in Alaska on our 2010 trip:

If you have a low minus tide the razor clamming a Clam Gulch is spectacular. I recall it is north of Ninilchik. Rent a clam gun nearby. My wife and I caught 100+. They are easy to clean with the right technique (watch YouTube videos) and phenomenal eating breaded with flour, followed by beaten eggs, followed by panko crumbs. Fry fast in oil, not too long or they will get rubbery.

The sockeye salmon fishing on the Kenai/Russian rivers is phenomenal. They don't "bite" and you have to hook them in the mouth. The fish only travel 2-5 feet from the bank so shore fishing is great. I found a place you had to wade through very shallow water until it just dropped off and fished there to get away from people. There is a technique where you flip about 10 feet of line (no reeling or casting) with a weight, bead and hook, and then swing your rod tip and floss them, hooking them in the corner of the mouth. Again fantastic eating fish and you can catch a pile when the run is on. We were there last week of July and did well. You need to find where the peak of the run is and focus on that area because the fish are on the move.

Here is a good article on how to sockeye salmon fish: Jimmie Jack’s Sockeye Salmon Technique

We stayed in an RV at Diamond M Ranch in Kenai and really enjoyed it.

We did two 1 day fly in fishing trips with Alaska Air West in Nikiski. Those trips were a huge highlight.

Louie's Restaurant in Kenai had excellent clam chowder and amazing fried jumbo prawns. I keep notes in my iPhone on good food and those notes are in there.

My Dad and Mom and 2 other couples did an RV trip to Alaska 30 years ago and always talked about the razor clams they got, but never said where. Thanks for that. Definitely on the schedule!!

C.C., U.H. gave you some good advice, BUT...the clam digging on the Kenai peninsula has been closed for a couple of years now. The numbers had dropped significantly and it may be awhile before it reopens. The west side of Cook Inlet is still open but you'll need a charter boat or airplane to get there. The clamming is still good there!

The Diamond M Ranch is a nice place to camp and has good fish cleaning facilities.

Louie's restaurant in Kenai is a really good place to eat. You'll enjoy all the taxidermy in there as well.

We'll keep in touch before you get here.

I had the pleasure of meeting and sharing a meal with one of our forum members. Team Kabob, Corey and his lovely wife and "little man" were up for a fishing trip! Absolutely wonderful folks, as seems to be the case with many on this forum!

We did Alaska in 2013, putting close to 11,000 miles on the pickup towing a camper. As has been said before, the Mile Post is the bible for Alcan highway. I would suggest taking 2 spares each for camper and pickup both of which should be very capable. I did carry a small hydraulic jack and a four way, chances are you will have a flat, I had 2 on the camper and 2 on the pickup. We traveled up thru Banff and Jasper, up to Dawson City over the chicken highway, Dawson city was ok, the crossing of the Yukon on ferry and the trip to Chicken was awesome. We went up to Arctic circle north of Fairbanks, then down to Denali NP and from there to Homer, Seward,, then up and back down to Valdez, we enjoyed Valdez a great deal. We then headed up and back down to Haines, and then ferried over to Skagway and up to the Alcan again. Then down to Stewart, BC and Hyder, AK, very worth the drive. Came home on the western side of BC with a stop in Prince Rupert for a few days of fishing. Fuel wasn't a problem, but I did carry extra 10 gallons just in case. So many highlights of trip I wouldn't really know where to start....I drove about 200-300 miles a day, getting a rv spot was pretty simple most the time. If you have any ? just pm me, I will try and answer them.

Your route is exactly what I have planned. I do have 2 brand new spares for my Travel trailer and 2 for my PU. It is diesel and I'll be carrying an extra tank that holds 50 gallons of fuel. We are planning a mid June start date and probable 2 months. I'll definitely PM you for additional questions.

It was a pleasure meeting you and your wife. Maybe next time will be up to fish or hunt. I've been wanting to post fishing photos from the trip.
