I just got my son a diamondback hp 4-16x for a couple hundred and it is surprisingly excellent glass. I compared it to my viper pst and its almost as good and about equal to my brothers nikon monarch.

I am supposed to help a buddies wife pick out a scope for his 243. It's a Ruger American Compact he got for a truck gun and coyote calling. The price range is under $400. He doesn't need to dial, extra crosshairs, or anything fancy just a good reliable scope. Thanks!

Features needed in order:
clarity
low light ability
good field of view
12x or more magnification.
I have been impressed with the Leupold VX-2 scopes. I have two of them on rim fires. For a non dialing scope, I think they would be really hard to beat. The glass on my VX-2 4-12 with the adjustable objective is really good. The image quality is surprisingly sharp for a scope at this price.

I have had a VX2 on my 7mm Rem mag now for over 40 years. It has held the same zero since the day that I sighted it in way back in 1977. I couldn't even begin to count the number of deer, elk, rabbits, coyotes, and other animal that I have looked at through this scope just before I pulled the trigger on.

They are a great scope both way back then and now.
