It is time for me to try to draw a NR deer tag in Wyoming. G has been a target for me for a long time but out of reach for multiple reasons over the years. I know some about the area but not nearly enough. If anyone is willing to share info or advice I’m all ears. I have 7 NR points and I think 2021 is a good year for me to draw but I don’t mind waiting a little longer either if for some reason there is a decline and the near future looks like it could rebound. I will likely me solo on this hunt as well so I’m not looking for a 10 mile deep backcountry hunt. I want to have a fun hunt and not turn it into a job like I often do. If there are other areas I should consider feel free to offer suggestions. I’ve been reading stories on here since 2012 and this is IMO the best forum out there. Thanks in advance and pm’s please.

Bear in mind with this region that it is going to be kind of crazy from an application perspective. I am betting that there will be a lot of people looking to burn points who have been sitting in the top tier for quite a while.

As to advice on Region G itself, well here it goes. Number one, expect to see people, overall numbers are down but IMO the ones hunting are pushing farther. Book plenty of time to hunt and SCOUT it if you at all can. If you can't scout plan to stay for quite a while just in case your plan A, B, C, and D get boogered.

I have never hunted G for deer, but did hunt late season cow elk 2X (Jan.) in the southern part of the unit. This past January I saw over 40 deer there, but understand that there was a rather severe winter kill. I deer hunted H this past Sept., not more than a few miles east of the Grey's River range and saw 34 deer in the first 4 days, but there was a complete lack of bucks. My partner ended up shooting a smaller 4x4, and I passed on one about the same size. Eventually, other hunters moved through the area and we never saw another deer. If you do draw in G, I would suggest that you go where horses can't go, as there are a number of outfitters, and lots of folks have their own stock in WY.

I think the region G ship has sailed. Between the high publicity and the winter kills, it just isn't worth the points to draw as a non-resident imo.

This is the kind of honest feedback I’m looking for guys. I’m not surprised by the responses so far, I have done some homework on my own. I was there on an archery elk hunt seven years ago and saw a few deer but wasn’t really looking for deer. I thought it was neat country and at the time I think the deer hunting may have been better? I also liked the fact that I can make the trip in one day, that farther East in Wyoming the longer the drive, but if I need to go farther I will. I like the idea of hunting without tons of competition even if there aren’t as many deer. I’m not opposed to hunting thick timber either, I’m not a great open country hunter. I seem to do better in areas many don’t like to hunt. I don’t need to see 20 deer a day, that’s not something I’m used to. I’m used to hunting days sometimes weeks without with seeing a buck. I would only have 5-7 days to hunt.

I have nothing more to add as a lot of great advice has already been given and I agree with all the comments above.
