I think I finally made up my mind and going to apply for region f. A couple questions for the experienced muley hunters, since I can go on pretty much no notice here's my question. You can hunt the first week of November in a couple if the units so would it be the best to wait for some weather to move in and then head out or go on the opener, if they get snow? I was going to stay in a cabin, but would have to book it and chance it. If they get snow about how long does it take for them to move? I'm worried if I wait to long would they be to low on private ground? Thanks guy's for any advice!!!

Never been there in November myself have hunted it in October and just for the atmosphere I think the higher elevation hunt is nice. There are some cabins up by the Montana border around Silver Gate and Cooke City. Know a few guys that do hunt F in November, but they just hunt whitetails down in the farm country.

Thanks. Was thinking of going out a couple days before season to do some scouting, maybe line something up for opener. Looking at sheep mountain and carter mountain, does that sound like a good idea? Do you think we can find deer early? I've heard October muleys are hard to hunt.

Getting there a day and a half early would be good just to get familiar with the area. last time I was up there it was really warm and the bucks were still in bachelor groups my buddy shot a 24" 4x4 out of a group of 7 and I was trying to kill a 3x3 that was pushing the 30"mark. All the times I've been up there I hunted around Beartooth Lake and then west of table mountain in the broken timber. The deer are no different here in October than they are in Minnesota, kind of a lull time, but that makes for great mid day naps.

Thanks, I think we might get a cabin for the opener and hunt the high country. If we don't get something maybe go back later. Around here if you get out on opener of bow season is the best. Before they wise up. A buddy of mine hunted there the third weekend last year and figured a lot of bucks got picked off on the opener.

The population of bears is pretty health up there so make sure you got a good plan for game retrieval and a place to hang quarters to keep them out. First time I was up there I had a mule deer hanging and the bottom of the bags were about 10' from the ground, the bear couldn't reach the meat bags so he just chewed the rope off and dropped the bags. He sat there all night and ate just about an entire deer.

Bad bear!! I think we will stay in a cabin, so hopefully we will be OK once we get off the mountain. Probably have to put it in coolers right away or see if they have a place to hang it.

F is my backup plan this year. Since they split it into two units now I am going to have to start studying the high country. One thing I do know is its pretty country and bears are likely to force me to sleep in my truck!

Yeah we thought about packing in with a fence. But I think we will get cabin or something. My luck they would get a snow storm when I was in there, although that might not be to bad I would get to stay longer!!

If you're planning on staying in or around Cooke City, you'll want to book a place as soon as you can. But just because you're staying in a cabin or hotel doesn't mean you'll be away from bears. They're very thick in that area. On a couple different occasions, we had a couple yearling Grizz getting into vehicles right in town there when we were working up there. Nothing will quite wake you up like opening the door to your hotel room in the middle of the night and being 10 feet away from one!

Why oh why do grizz have to act that way? Guess that adds another element to the hunt!!

We didnt draw anything and the leftover deer tags are not conducive to our October 1st time frame. Going to study the leftover cow and pronghorn tags now.

Im thinking of trying to cash my 4 deer points in next year, I would rather hunt a mediocre unit then not hunt at all.

I didn't draw on my second choice. It was 58% draw in the regular on second choice.

Wow! When they split it into 2 units did tags go down that much or did that many people apply?

Wish my wife would agree with me and move to WY so I dont have to worry so much about drawing tags, haha.
