Just got back from a hunt south of Tensleep. We had never seen rattlers there before, but saw three this time. They were small, medium, nd large. The large was over 4' long and was as big around as my forearm.

It all depends on the temperatures in the area. Even when they den up they will venture out of the den on a warmer day to warm up before heading back underground.
It's not the ones that you see that get you. We did a lot of crawling around in the dirt while trying to sneak up on antelope, and there are plenty of places where a snake could be that would be a surprise to both of you. I did have my first close-up encounter with some cactus though, and am still picking those little stickers out of my knee a week later.
