I keep asking myself why I'm reading this thread ...I hate the bastards.
The purpose of this thread is to share info so we can all be safer in areas with rattle snakes. I would appreciate it if you would edit the last word of your post as it is not very forum appropriate.

This is another good reason that some of you should move up here to Alaska....no snakes!

I had a close encounter with a rattler while elk hunting this year, shot my bull with the dang thing only a couple feet away. I always carry an extra junk arrow with a good durable fixed blade broadhead, usually a muzzy, to shoot them when I see them. Over the years I have probably killed 30 plus rattlers while bow hunting. Almost every one of those I dang near stepped on it seems like and in my experience they definitely rattle to let you know they are there prior to striking at you. I have never once had one strike at me until I started to shoot at him.

I certainly would want to apologize should someone take offense to one of my posts. Even though I've been in contact with them multiple times over the years while hunting pronghorn, in a duck blind, hiding under the truck, on my in laws patio and who knows how many times while out scouting....I have never killed one.
To me it is far more offensive to needlessly kill something than any words you may or may not use to describe them.
I don't like them one bit but to kill one just because it's there seems pretty vulgar to me.....but I do understand why.

Hellsfire....in Colorado if ones attacking you, your screwed if it's not between June 15th and August 15th because their protected any other time. And your only allowed to kill three in one day and have six in your possession at a time. You also better have a small game license in your possession. Thank you yuppies! Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang, bang!!!
SSS Does that mean I have to stop my truck and let them cross?

I've only seen one Coral snake in my life. Being a neurotoxin, I heard its pretty bad.
Mojave Greens also have the neurotoxin venom. When I was hunting in Louisiana many years ago, I heard something rustling the leaves close to where I was sitting. I moved the leaves with my gun barrel, and there was one of the little tri colored demons. Since he was so small, I thought I would just stomp him. Bad idea. He got caught between the Vibram lugs on my boot sole. There immediately commenced one of the greatest exhibitions of clog dancing by a fat man that the world has ever seen. When that darn snake finally dislodged, he was headed into the stratosphere. When I could breathe again, I noticed my cousin lying on the ground shaking. I was afraid that he was having a heard attack, but then realized he was convulsing with laughter and gasping "camera", "camera". So much for that deer hunting trip!

And that is why I carry along some Flour, Pappys, and a bottle of wesson oil.......I had my first NC timber Rattler at 15 and just had my first Alligator a few months ago. The TR was far better tasting!

If you ever lived in any of the Gulf Coast states, you have a lot of snake stories. I was squirrel hunting one time, and saw too big fox squirrels cutting cones in a tall cypress tree. I eased around where I could get a shot and killed the first one. The second one retreated to the back side of the tree. While trying to keep my eye on him, I was reaching down to pick up his fallen partner, but he was not where he fell. I looked down, and a big cottonmouth was trying to make a meal out of my squirrel. If anyone ever tells you that you cannot shoot a snake in the head with a .22 rifle offhand, while airborne, it is simply not true.

Was archery antelope hunting in Montana in August; it's typically so hot that I wear shorts. I always thought that they would rattle before striking - not true. Thankfully the bugger didn't get me, but coiled up. I backed up to 20 yards and ranged it and let the muzzy fly. He was pronounced dead at the scene. I can't stand snakes so I didn't even touch him.
