Raingear Recommendation

All,

Most of my hunts have been archery, or first rifle in Colorado, High Desert in Idaho etc , so raingear has not been a necessity- usually.

I've recently bought some tags for N Idaho in 10A in late October, early November and my sense is I will need a good set. Other than the Kuiu and Sitka - which are expensive and size challenged for athletic, wide shoulders and full seat in legs, it creates a problem for me. I've worked out for years.

First Lite is good stuff from what I've red here. Has anyone used the King's Camo XKG line?

Thanks for your time

I wear first lite. 5'10" 195 lbs former college football player. Most brands are snug like you said. Size L for FL rain jacket. Haven't had to put it to use yet but fit is great. Also their pants have more room and not skinny aka "athletic" fit as other brands say

Yes, I get it because I'm in the same spot. Slimmer in the waist, very broad, muscular legs- usually a problem. Gear seems to be no different.

Why???? Why are companies making gear so small? Even Cableas is a bit enemic on large sizes- not on price though. Very expensive

I've been looking at King's Camo too. Seems to be decent stuff. Kuiu looks great but it may be a bit small.

I went to my nearest Cabelas store (Grand Junction) and started trying on different brands. I ended up buying Cabelas' brand jacket and pants. I like to buy a size (or even 2) larger than I wear so it is loose over all my clothing, even a jacket. Just like boots, want to try them on before I buy.

I too am a former college football player and need to find the right fit.

I've used Cabelas dry plus parka and pants for years, just got a new parka last year...the old one was over 10 years old and beat-up. Still kept me dry.

I thought the Under Armour stuff fit a little better than the Kuiu and Sitka. Also, check out the Cabelas Space Rain suit. It us packable and works well.

Yes, I've been looking but Cabelas is dropping the ball - Big Time when it comes to carrying larger sizes and doing so consistently, even in their patterns.

Right now if you look at their gear like the silent suede rain suits or even the space suit, the jacket may go to 3xl , yet usually only 2xl in one pattern and then only have XL or 2xl in another pattern . So you have two different patterns

Or on their 02 line - which I happen like, especially the octane they'll carry 3xl shorts in Microtex, up to 44 waist in pants but only 2xl in jackets or vests??? When does that make sense?

I did find a few "puffy" jackets which will keep you warm but snag in heavy timber that they used as replacements for the more rugged predecessors. Highly Frustrating....

Trying to find anything in 3XL any more has proven to be very difficult, and very frustrating .

Before skipping Kuiu, I think it perhaps may be worth considering a Chugach NX Rain Jacket. It is an excellent rain jacket, but better than that I use it on nearly ALL of my hunts. In a layering system I use it both as a rain coat but more often it is the layer I use to cut wind (not break wind...ha ha). On a September bow hunt I will have this on in the morning, with an insulating layer underneath. On an October mule deer hunt. I will use is almost all day if I am in an area with a cold cutting wind. In rain, it is my rain coat and I live in Western Oregon (wet). It stretches with you and doesn't bind. I will wear it almost EVERY day hunting, unless it is just too warm for a coat of any kind.

A lot of Kuiu stuff is athletic cut which doesn't fit me well, but the Chugach is roomy in the shoulders and torso and has room for layering, and it is one of my favorite pieces. This year will be my 6th season using it, and it is still in excellent condition.

Perhaps thinking of it as a piece with a wide range of uses will help justify the cost.

Don't leave out of your search technique Craigslist Pro app, Ebay, etc etc......I get a ton of high end gear at 50-60% off prices that way. Only issue is the timing as you gotta search for it....so if its needed now that method doesn't work.

WRT Kings camo rain gear and hunting pants ( what I've had and worn) it was different for each item I thought on sizing. Some pants and jackets styles were snug and others not so much.

I love the Firrt Lite stuff also seemed to be in the middle for me WRT sizing. I think great gear but again, gotta figure what fits you best.

Excellent recommendation but I've never heard of it or used it Craigs list pro.

I'm guessing it's an app of some kind? What about pay feature in terms of security?

Thank you for the recomendation

I'll piggyback on this thread. We're going into the Fitzpatrick Wilderness in 30 days. I need some kind of shell for that trip.

I usually wear a wool or synthetic base later and a wool twill shirt over that, then a wool commando sweater on top of that. I have an unlined sweater and also a windshear so I'm good either way. My need I think is for a shell to put over either in the event of weather. Odd that I have scads of gear and clothing and no such item but there it is. I have a couple small local sources but this is most likely a mail order situation for me. Thoughts?

The lighter First Lite or Sitka stuff would probably work well for you.

First lite vapor storm light jacket works great as well. I wear large in jackets and it fits true as a large. Breathes better than expected without any pit zips

Sitka has a lot that can double as an outside layer that is also water proof. The difference is their gear will still breath.

I used the storm front all weekend, a buddy used the Kryptek Altitude, and another used First Lite. All performed exceedingly well.
