Could you legally walk down Railroad tracks or a railroad right of way to access public land?

RR are private property in my state. In some states OLD RR properties are accessible but Im unsure about WY.

It is illegal. My dad worked for the Union Pacific for 25 years- I still have many contacts and even they won't give permission. I guess its a big deal due to the liability issues.

Agree with Hilltop. I used to bird hunt along the tracks growing up as it cut through our farm ground. They just waved from the trains. I was stopped only once and that was when I was riding a motorcycle along them. They just told me to ride some where else. I shot dozens of roosters along the mile or so length. They won't ever give permission but probably won't press charges.

Illegal but rarely if ever enforced. Roll the dice.

If you stay off the right of way in vehicles and walk only, I doubt that you would have an issue. If you are walking, you will know a train is coming long before they get there and can be will off the tracks or R/R. In a vehicle you can pose a risk to the train if you don't hear them or get stuck. That's just my experience in my locale and from talking to RR employees.

I was looking at a map of an antelope unit with leftover tags lastnight and noticed a RR going through it. I dont know if it currently used or if it is abandoned. I am pretty sure there are other ways to get to the blm I would want to hunt if I decided to hunt there but it got me thinking if all else failed could I walk up the RR to get to the blm.
