Rage 2-Blade

What are your guys thoughts on using the Rage 2-blade 100 gr for elk? Im shooting right at 68-70 lbs with a 300 gr Easton FMJ.

How are all the copy cat 2 blade mechanicals able to do so?

If you don't end up using them I'd use one of the similarly designed mechanicals.

I've never hunted elk so take my opinion with a grain of salt. I love rages. I've killed over a dozen deer with them and they really help marginal shots. That said, when I get to hunt elk Ill be going fixed blade. I figure if I can't hit the lungs of an elk I have no business shooting a bow.

Rage are worth their weight in gold when it comes to making a mediocre shot a great shot, and a poor shot a kill shot. If ya put it through the lungs I don't think it matters. And with lungs the size of pie plates......

I think I'd err on the side of extra penetration. A fixed blade will help you get through bone or save deflects. Just my opinion! I really like the shuttle t locs from Trophy Taker. They fly great and get the job done. If I'm shooting fixed heads I like a solid, compact head.

I love the wound channels created but have had issues hiking with them as they do come open in my quiver. I personally don't use them anymore for this reason. I have taken several elk with expandable broadheads and so have several of my friends. One of my buddies has several complete pass throughs with NAP Spitfires and another friend and myself shoot a Cabela's brand expandable. Both of these have been very reliable, never open in the quiver, and leave a canal of a hole in the animals we shoot. We all shoot very high kinetic energy bows so penetration has never been a concern... All three of us have a total arrow weight, with broadhead, over 400 grains and I'm well over 300 FPS. I am not against fixed blade but I feel the tuning and wind planning advantages of a mechanical are worth the slight loss in penetration when using a high KE setup.

I used the Rage 2 blade for my first shot on my bull elk last year and was very disappointed. I shoot 70# Mathews DXT with 345 grain total arrow weight with 100 grain broad heads. The Rage hitting my bull a little far back and it only penetrated 4". It deployed in flight. The bull ran 20 yards and stopped. I then used a G5 Montec carbon steel fixed blade and it blew right through him. Needless to say, I will only shoot Rages for deer. Elk will ALWAYS get the Montecs in the future. They have never let me down.

Stay away from Rage and Toxic heads for elk.

Huh, I've done okay with Rages on Elk. Killed two bulls of my own with them and have witnessed about seven bulls never make it out of sight. Work for me!

Honestly...any broadhead will kill an elk. Everyone will continue to jump on the bandwagon for whatever the newest release is. Be confident in/with your shot and even the cheapest broadhead on the market will give the animal a dirt nap. I myself will probably stick with fixed blades because of personal experiences.

I use Magnus Stinger buzzcuts 100 grains. I think any broadhead will work as long as you make good shot placement. But some are tougher made than others!

Remember were way more advance than what native americans used back in the day and they had no problem putting game down on mother earth.
