Question about units listed in the MRS section

Hey guys, I have a question regarding the units listed in the MRS section of Eastmans magazine. I've noticed that different units are listed different years. Is there a reason for that? Also, I'm sure that obviously affects the number of hunters that apply for specific units. There's a unit that I like a lot (2 points, applying in the antelope Special Draw) and it wasn't listed last year. Conversely, the unit I applied for last year is not listed this year. Is this common? Also, is there a specific reason why some units are listed in the MRS and others aren't? Thanks so much for your help!

Roger

It's hard to say, but probably the reason that they don't list all of the antelope units is because they don't have room in the tables to list them all and/or may not have reliable information to base a rating on for every area. Sure, some areas are going to be better than others based on a number of factors. If you have an area that you know well and produces for you, I'd kind of be glad that it isn't in the MRS getting a bunch of hype and skewing draw odds from year to year.

Roger,

Another thing to consider is that the Wyoming Game and Fish will occasionally make changes to unit numbers. I am aware of a few antelope areas recently that were combined to form one unit. Changes like this can make looking at multiple year MRS confusing.

All of the above is why. We were able to include all of Wyoming in the digital edition though.

I personally noticed a Blue Chip Unit this year for one of the Wyoming big game species that was not on the MRS last year. Being that it is a Blue Chip Unit this year, I doubt that it would have been one of the units that was selected to be left off last year. Does this mean the only explanation is that it was part of a different unit number last year?

Was it an elk unit?

I actually just checked the 2014 map versus the 2015 map and the unit is the same. Not an elk unit, it was actually Antelope. Not sure the explanation.

There were two such units for antelope that are listed as blue chip this year that weren't discussed in last years version.

One thing to remember is that the state of Wyoming has been through many recent tough winters and droughts. This has changed the quality of many units. I believe this to be the main reason for the drastic change in the MRS. Remember the MRS is only a guide, and a great starting point.

elk wise Area 123 and 113 often get messed up in the MRS 123 is the open unit for bulls this year and 113 is closed. I think they listed 113 in the mrs which normally is a better hunt with more public land but it is closed for bull tags this year.

I have noticed that too....always assumed those units not listed were the units those in charge of the mag were putting in for and they did not want to blow up the odds that year, but once they draw it who cares, blow it up the next year.

That being said, the unit you are referencing this year is there, it was just moved to a different area of the MRS, downgraded.

I hunted the unit last year that you mentioned that was missing from last year's MRS all together, it is blue chipped this year, unjustifiably so in my opinion. Plenty of antelope but it seems a whole age class is missing, the goats all looked like carbon copies of each other, all younger goats. The applications will skyrocket though as the lemmings will all drop apps based on the simple fact its a blue chipped unit. Another unit to stay away from now that it is blue chipped as the odds will jump above what it is worth points wise.

Keep in mind that more than just trophy quality goes into a units rating. Large populations with lots of accessible land bump a rating up quite a bit. If your eye is only on horn/antler size, research differently IMO.

Actually since the only part of the unit chart that is color coded is the future trophy quality.....that is where the emphasis is placed, and in this case the unit did not get outstanding ratings in other areas, some poor ratings actually and my point to him was exactly that, to research differently because the magazine is off base on the unit he is considering.
