Aunt/Uncle own a ranch in the Sandhills...we visited every summer growing up. Love the area. They hunt the ranch and I would never even think of asking them for permission...It's their long standing family tradition. I do not want to impose.

I work in higher ed and have 20+ people reporting to me, serve 6,000+ students...lots of phone calls and e-mails daily. Made my first trek to the Sandhills to chase deer in 2011, more as a "get-away" from work. Shot a nice whitetail opening morning and was hooked.

Decided to concentrate on Mule Deer...right about the time disease hit the area hard. I struggled to even find deer but kept hunting hard, researching, kept at it. I'm a part time photographer and got some good pictures when I wasn't seeing deer...

Found Eastmans and really expanded my Muley knowledge base and learned a ton. Put a tag on my first Mule Deer last year!

Could never get my Winchester 70, lefty 7mag to pattern well. Finally got it shooting good just the day before the rifle opener.

Classic spot and stalk on opening day, Veteran's Day 2017. Took him down with one shot from the 7mag from 212 yards. He scored 155 typical, 165 non-typical (or "thirteen points" as my Missouri friends like to say). I'm going to get him Euro-mount.

Spent the next five days exploring the Sandhills, trying to fill my second tag, relaxing and enjoying the peace and quiet of western Nebraska. This isn't a backpack hunt...I sleep in a hotel every night, get hot shower, and warm meal in my belly.

A few more pictures from the week...

Sandhills traffic...

One last picture...probably my favorite...

Thanks for all the advice and encouragement. And for posting pictures of your deer...I'm a competitive bastard, and this stuff drives me : )

Back at work now...staring at 708 e-mails in my work-space. Going to chase waterfowl this weekend with my brother, and hopefully break out the Muzzy in December to chase white-tails in Eastern Nebraska. Take care, Daubs

Looking at your first and second buck in the same post, you took a big step up in your second year!
