Is this for real? how can anyone wait 22 years to go elk hunting? that's ridiculous. So residents of Utah how do you hunt on a yearly basis? I want to go elk hunting here in the next year or two... do I have to go with an outfitter to get a tag how does it work?

If I'm not mistaken, these statistics are for limited entry units. There are some units with OTC tags available.

Utah has some of the best elk hunting for big bulls in the country so demand is high and the wait is long, but we have OTC any bull areas and OTC spike only areas (which happen to be in the limited areas) to keep us busy until we draw a primo tag.

I'm liking my odds for San Juan early rifle with 21 points. Only three other guys this year.

20+ points is VERY common for the quality of elk hunts Utah has to offer.

That makes it easier to bare. I suppose the best thing to do is make it through this Wyoming antelope season and put in for a point in a couple different states when I can for the elk. Do any outfitters get guaranteed tags in good areas. For no point having clients

Outfitters do not get any tags but you can buy either a conservation tag or a CWMU tag (private land tag) to jump to the front of the line. Be prepared though, they are not cheap on the good units.

As a NR with 19 LE deer points in UT I feel like I'm a point or two behind. But the most annoying part is the one tag for both the Henrys and Paunsaugunt archery and muzzleloader hunts, which pushes the tags to the random draw. All I can hope is that a few more tags are issued for both the Henrys and Paunsaugunt over the next few years to help reduce the number of point holders above me. I'm only 43 and feel like I can hold on for another 15 years if needed. I'd consider the Paunsaugunt archery and muzzleloader seasons if the unit ever rebounded to what it was like in the mid-1990s.

This year the muzzleloader elk dates were favorable for the rut so lots of people jumped in. I went in with 11 NR points and applied for a unit I figured I had a decent shot. Wrong! Lots of people with more points than me put in for that hunt. I wouldn't even have been a guaranteed bonus tag draw for the Wasatch this year. In years past it would have been guaranteed.

I think I'll just keep applying for a quality unit where it would be a random draw until I get enough points to draw a bonus tag. I'm 45 with a kind of bad back so it's probably going to have to be in the next 10 years for an archery or muzzleloader hunt.

I had a bunch of points going into the elk draw this year, but due to having another hunt lined up at approximately the same time, I applied for San Juan since they we're only giving out one tag. Figured I'd never draw and I didn't. Maybe next year will be the year I hunt Utah elk. For guys groaning about not getting to do a quality Utah hunt, here's some help. Get ya a job at McDonalds working weekends. Save yer shekels for 3 years and you'll have enough coin to hunt a top quality CWMU. The deal is, you gotta want it. Otherwise, plan on waiting 20 plus years like most everyone else...
