Poor mans sheep

Hey all been an eastman's subscriber for years but signed up to this forum today. Anyway thought I would share some pictures of my Aoudad hunt with you guys. Had to find something to settle my sheep craze until I can get to AK in 2013 for my Dall hunt. Hope you enjoy.

Sooo you say poor mans sheep? Fill me in. If it's fairly inexpensive and can easily draw a tag, I'm In!! I have never heard of them. They look amazing.

Exotics are fun to hunt. There are tons of sheep, goats, and deer. I'm planning a Tx hunt this year for my wife and I for our 10 year anniversary. Were taking my 8 year old daughter too. Were looking for Axis,Fallow,and Aoudad. Found a place $700 each everything included except airfare, shipping, and taxidermy.

Great sheep to hunt and am really looking forward to it. Were did you hunt?

No all high fence. More like a shoot then a hunt but they are not caged like a lot of the trophy whitetail are then let out a couple days before you get there, then the deer come to you cause they think your gonna hand feed them then they get shot. Even though it's high fence the properties I've hunted are multiple square miles of open country. Still a high fence hunt but as fair chase for these kinds of animals as you can get in the US. I do believe there is a hunt for theses sheep in Az or New Mexico that is not high fence but no idea on the tags or how to get them. I saw a show on it last year.

They have them free roaming in New Mexico but they aren't in Az. . I friend of mine who lives in N.M. got drawn for one (hard to do) and shot one (Auodad).

Lots of free range exotics in Texas..... elk and aoudad in west TX being some of the most challenging.
If you want a really hard hunt try bow hunting aoudad around big bend. I would bring a 500 yard rifle just incase though.
There are several options on HF place.. Some ranging over 30,000 acre to small 320 acre places.

Texas gets a bad wrap sometimes on HF's but people also forget Texas has private ranches that are larger then the state of Rhode island

Lot of free range exotics in Texas.. you want a very very challenging free range hunt try bowhunting aoudad around big bend.

Got to remember tx has private ranches bigger then the state of Rhode island.
Texas does get a bad wrap on HF but some of those HF's are 30k acres, most those animals behind them aren't migrating species any way so not that big of a deal

Aoudad have been free roaming in Texas since the 1940's I believe. I used to hunt these animals in West Texas where the ranchers did not want them around their domestic sheep or goats. Our ranch owner begged us to shoot as many as possible if we spotted them because they are very destructive animals to low fences and tend to bully the rams and billies of domesticated animals. I have killed some pretty nice silver and gold medal rams over the years all free roaming and not easy hunts when they are in "their" environment. My brother and I spent the last three years of hunting on our last West Texas ranch for nothing but Aoudad because of the anthrax die off of the deer and we had a ton of fun just trying to locate them in the mountains. I irks me now that people charge so much money to hunt something that used to be free but I guess that is the American way!
