Of course the elk are not going to be living in the city but I doubt that they will be at 11,000' also. And if the terrine is steep and they are in the rut they won't be there. The bulls might venture up there during the summer to get away from the bugs but when the urge strikes them to go find a lady they are going to go where the ladies are and that is going to be down in the trees.

Thick, wet, cool, secluded dense forested areas are KEY... Find the ladies, find the bulls. Figure out their patterns and you are golden. Biggest thing in elk hunting is patience!! Just because you don't see them doesn't mean they aren't there..... They may have seen you first if you are walking aimlessly looking for them!! Slow and steady wins the race. They may be up high... But from my experience it won't be for long. Generally it's because a hunter blew them out of the basin or they got their butt whooped and are heading to the next harem

You guys have no idea how much I appreciate that advice. Ive gathered a ton from this site by mostly doing my own research and you cant put a price on this forums value to a guy just starting out.

I will stick to my plan but I am not going to be stubborn enough that I wont relocate if Im not finding anything. The biggest things I was originally trying to achieve were finding a ML tag I had good odds at drawing without any points in a unit that I felt like I could get away from people if I was willing to work for it. I hope I have achieved that part and now I will be working the drainages by glassing with my spotting scope and working down.
