When you put the dry ice in the cooler or freezers do you put anything over it before putting meat in it or how do you go about packing with the dry ice

I have only attempted this once, 2 years ago on an early August cow elk hunt. I placed the 2 blocks in the bottom then just loaded the cooler with ice. 4 days later I killed out, all the dry ice was gone but the cooler was all but one big block of ice. I had to chip it away with my pocket knife to get it out and put the elk in. Previous to the season I had watched multiple Youtube videos and the one that stuck out to me was putting some kind of foam in between the dry ice and regular ice. Foam like one of those cheap foam coolers. If this cooler will have regular food in it, then you put that on top of the regular ice. If there was something you wanted to stay frozen, then you place it closer to the dry ice.

With it all said and done, I would probably put some kind of layer in between the 2 but I did not mind having to chip away ice. That weekend was low to high 90s so having that much ice after 4 days helped ease my mind.

Hope that all makes sense and helps.

Yeah, you'll definitely want some kind of barrier whether you want it to freeze or just stay cold. It will freezer burn if meat is put up against it. We put layers of cardboard between the dry ice and meat. Still ended up with frozen meat by the time we got home.

We bought our dry ice from a game processor and he gave us the cardboard.

Amazon has the igloo sportsman 55 QT for 175$. Looks like a great deal on a well reviewed roto-molded cooler made in the US.

Rtic now has 110 and 165 coolers shipping later this year. Not sure how Harvey will affect them tho.

I have done a fair amount of multi day raft trips. This is the first season of using a yeti roto molded cooler. I fully understand cooler management and stuff like that. With that said. I have been impressed with the yeti. I have came off of other 7 day raft trips where I still had ice,(igloo marine). This summer I had 3 different multi day raft trips and I was impressed with the yeti.

just thought I would share that. It is not so much of the ice retention, but the overall cooler is just well built. granted it is a very heavy cooler, especially loaded down for a week. But all in all, a very nice cooler that did it's job very well. I do need to state I have never needed a cooler for hunting, Or I never gave a cooler any thought hunting. it is always cold when I go hunting.

Do yourself a favor look at RTIC coolers. Best cooler for the money. Every bit as good as a Yeti, but at half the cost. We have to of their bigger ones and love them. Only down side is that they make your cooler after you order it so it takes a few months to get it.
Rtic are on sale and they now have 110 about $230 and 165 for about $320 size coolers.
