All packed up to go trophy spike elk hunting in the morning! lol. More scouting for hopefully drawing a bull tag someday then anything. An elk for the freezer would be nice but sure wont be disappointed if I never fire a shot either. Its not to far from home but I have never been there. Dont have much of a plan other then driving to the end of a road on the border of wilderness and national forest, putting my canvas tent up and walking into the wilderness. It opened yesterday but decided to wait till after opening weekend hoping there will be less hunters out. Looking forward to some time in the woods! I plan on using the .270 this time but got my old 30-30 behind the seat too:)

Plan on going for about 5 days and its not supposed to be much below freezing at night. Im sure I have enough food and clothes packed to stay over 2 weeks in below zero weather! Least I wont be the guy search and rescue has to go find thats starving and almost froze to death in tennis shoes and a t-shirt... LOL! I even remembered the tent stakes this year:)

That's all I'm looking for too, two more months to get it done! Hopefully it will happen this Thursday, if not, I will be scouting then hunting for my Pop's bull for up to two weeks. Then I will be able to get back to the Rubies and find something edible.

Congrats!
2 more months?? My season was only 5 days long. I can't imagine elk hunting for months, that would be awesome! Good luck out there..

Ya its a depredation hunt Nevada does to attempt to get rid of the elk. They have 2 seasons, August - September and October - January 1st. Pretty tough hunting, the numbers are low and some prime country is accessibly hard to get to. Seen a couple spikes and one raghorn so far. Been snowing here yesterday and today, so I am hoping things get to moving.

I know, it can be rough here in Oregon. The better units take years to draw too. The unit I had is easy to draw, success rate is around 9% though, so I feel pretty lucky to have killed one.

Couldnt find an elk to save my life! Covered quite a bit of country, glassed alot, still hunted some timber. Never saw a deer or elk. Saw a few tracks but nothing very fresh and I think they were just passing through. Had a great time and it was nice country! Not much feed in most of it so I expect that explains the lack of animals. Ill post some pics when I get time!
