Lead was flying, animals were moving and the wrong gender was in our sights all day! :)
I say all this just for a laugh, nothing mean spirited, just being funny as the rifle seasons are just so different than the archery/ muzzle season. The eastern hunter using a semi auto rifle with the mentality of not bringing ammo back to camp is in full effect.:)

We got into the woods 3 hours before sunrise and our primary spot had someone in it already. Hell way I see it, if you beat me into the woods, good on ya. We went to our second spot and set up. Before shot ing light we had 15 cows and calves feed within 20 yards. They then got bumped by 3 hunters walking right down the middle of a small park. The park is only 40 yards by 40 yards :) They were walking towards us and I flashed my headlamp. One gentlemen came over and was visibly out of shape huffing and puffing and said I was on his tree that he had been hunting for 10 years. I told him year 11 then didn't treat him well, please move on as you just bumped animals from in front of us. Dude! Opening morning if you are not at your spot/glassing area before first light, you are wrong IMO.
While that conversation ends a bull fires up as he just got split from his cows, we start to call and he's coming. He gets to about 90 yards screaming and I assuming scents someone and shuts up. He goes upwind and 1/2 later let's out another bugle, we call to him and I'm guessing he makes about a 20 yard walk towards us, bugles again and we never see or hear him. My guess is there was no way he was gonna bee line back to us without the wind in his favor. We are 2.5 miles from the trailhead at this point.
The rest of the morning we sit a transit area of north facing dark timber and have 5 more cows in front of us and a lone non shooter bull. We start making our way back to camp and sit a chute area but as I guessed, that much scent and shooting there was a small chance anyone was coming out to feed with shooting light.

So......our plan A worked. Just the wrong gender in front of us. Now it gets tricky. We will most likely sit some dark north facing timber overlooking a creek with plenty of feed nearby while the woods clears out a little and this next front comes through.

That's some funny stuff right there. Maybe easterner waited to sight his rifle in(on live game) when he arrived...lol.
Slugz you should know better than to take another man's tree. haha.
Good stuff. You're keeping me entertained. Good luck with the traffic.

Day two and only a single cow at 40 yards.

I have yet to even scratch the entertainment value I can provide to the interweb from the this trip. Our base camp is at 10,400 and I keep a Rino530 on scan. I have enough material for an entire thread I'll start later. Main subjects from the radio chatter. 1. )Wife talk 2. )Girlfriend talk 3).What GMU am I in? 4). This is my first time in the woods with this radio. 5. ) Why can other people hear me on this channel. 6) I'm out of T.P. 7) It's so Elky here but I'm too far from camp.

lol....1 & 2 are just "no no's" out in the woods. And the rest of that list ..well, they should have stayed at home. Good Luck out there.

Thanks for the positive feedback. Hunted in gale force winds today on the downwind side. Nothing seen. Heard 3 shots from all different directions. Snow came early today 2 inches on the ground now. Wind is supposed to lay down and clear up. Should be really nice in the am. As predicted I'm estimating 60% of the camps picked up Sunday night. Hoping the less pressure and fresh snow should produce some results.

Funny of the day. The snow starts to dump and we get cold real quick about 1030 am today. We hole up near a creek under a tree and prepare to start a fire and have some instant chicken noodle soup. My son and I begin our made for tv fire prep with really nice tinder and bed. (I usually have Vaseline cotton balls) When dummy me realizes I have a jet boil. I take the water off and poof instant fire made with the jet boil flame. Why have I not done that before vice matches/vaseline/cotton balls. Dummy.

Story's around a jet boil aren't as romantic as ones around a campfire. Come on, Man! Haha

Licking our wounds this am. Well, not without a lack of effort we couldn't close the deal. We broke camp down and went into Meeker for dinner and will head back home today. I'll compile our lessons learned and post in a few days. We came out early due to a fresh snow and the ability for us to confirm the bulk of the animals are on the BLM /Private line of land. We cut a single cow track all day yesterday. Went to our steep hidey hole ( with the correct wind) only to find someone came in it high on horses and blew them out.
That seemed to be the main theme for the hunt. Humans using horses and forgetting the scent implications, route of travel.
All in all a great time in the woods in our primary GMU. Learned a ton and will most likely stick to our original game plans of hunting archery /muzzleloader then 4th season late cow rifle.

Sounds like we had the same experience Slugz. We were in Northern Colorado and the wind was unbelievable from the time we arrived on Friday until we decided to break camp Monday night. I have never seen so many trees blow down but it got a little nerve racking at times. The snow came in Monday mid-day and by 4pm had several inches on the ground. Decided it would be best to try and get the trailer down the mountain since it didn't show any signs of letting up. We walked for miles but could not turn anything up.
