Hearing the apology for the kids inheritance, I can help but wonder if it is bad if I am thinking about reducing my 401k so I can afford pack goats? lol

* Work my tail off around the house so there isn't anything left that is pressing come September 1st.
* Shoot my bow daily
* Do my best to keep the daydreaming to a minimum so I don't lose my job between now and September 1st
* Thank my wife frequently for understanding

I already know my hunt area so scouting will be more real time boots on the ground stuff. I still have several resident friends who I'm hunting with so no need to make scouting trips. I'll save the vacation time for actual hunting.

I usually just head to various hunting web page forums and ask if anyone has info on my unit in my first post.

As a backup I use faccebook to ask for info.

And then I usually place an ad on craigslist asking for landowners to contact me about a trespass fee hunt.

GO THERE. A buddy and I drew for GMU 7/8 in Colorado. It's a sketchy area - plenty of game, but tricky access and lots of hunting pressure. I LOVE Google Earth (and better still, CalTopo, my main planning tool, and OnX, which has better offline functionality) and I do a lot of planning with it. But that's just a little more data. I want to see scat, tracks, and tufts of hair in fences.

I think the trip was worth it. You be the judge.

Stream-fed aspen meadow, plenty of rich food for animals passing through:

I use "hunting season will be here before you know it!" as an excuse to my wife every chance I get to go hiking :) Every time I go out I have a mental checklist:

1. Access, with routes to "push back" into areas the day-trippers won't get to,
2. Camp sites,
3. Travel routes to hunting areas, where I won't be scaring the game,
4. Bedding areas and trails to daytime food sources,
5. Cell service. Yeah, yeah, "go off grid", but I do like to stay in touch so folks know I'm OK - and I know they are, too.

I'm a little bit different in that it doesn't matter if I have a tag or not, certain areas I scout year round regardless (for the future) and to keep tabs on the ups and downs. So when I do get a tag, everything pretty much stays the same, except more days out scouting in the weeks prior to said season opener. When I do get a tag, it sits on the fridge door as a reminder every time I open it to make good choices :)
