Non-Resident Questions..

Hey everyone.
I'm new to the forum here, but have read quite a bit of it! You guys have some unique hunting opportunities that we are just not used to out here in Iowa!

With that said, I have family that lives in Wyoming, and they own quite a bit of land. On that land, they have a nice herd of antelope that I've gotten the okay to come out and hunt. Heck, even the wife gave me the okay!

So, I tried to do some looking online and figure out if it's preference points or over the counter tags, and I just can't seem to find solid information in regards to that.

I'm pretty sure that Wyoming is set up by "zones" - the land is located between the Big Horn Mts to their East and Pryor Mts to the North if that helps. My aunt is going to have her husband do some checking to see if he can figure out what zone that is, but I figured this might be just as easy - and I'd probably gain some valuable knowledge in regards to how I can try to get an antelope tag.

My dream hunt is a bull Elk, so info on that would be cool as well. Looking for a rifle season - bow would be cool, but I just don't have the experience with mine to justify attempting that.

Welcome to the forum Herkster. There are quite a few antelope areas ( zones ) west of the bighorns. Most of these areas do require preference points t guarantee a tag. You can apply in the random draw - it is very low odds but you do have a chance. Try to find out the specific location of the ranch and we can give you some better information.

I would also recommend heading over to the new members section and leave an introduction post...we love to see hunting pictures and hear a bit about you/family.

All Antelope tags are draw only. If there are leftovers, then they can be bought on a first come first serve basis. Since the area is in the western side of the state, chances are high you will need preference points to draw. You are probably looking at area 77 or 78.

Holy cow! Talk about quick replies! While I was hoping it wasn't going to be preference points, I had a feeling it would be. Darn my bad luck anyways. Is there a site where I have to pay to start building those points up? Is everything in that area a draw tag? Elk as well? Not sure what else is out there to hunt....

Yes everything will be a draw. You can buy just preference points or add that option when you apply in the random draw. Log on to the Wyoming Game and Fish and click the hunting tab...all your answers are right there for you.

Lovell sits on the intersection of two antelope areas- 78 and 80. Area 78 took 4 points to draw last year and area 80 took 6 points. In the random draw area 78 was a 1 in 18 chance to draw and area 80 was a 1 in 96 chance at the draw. If they are south of Lovell, you have a small shot at drawing. If they are north your chances are very slim.

Well, I'm not liking my odds! Oh well, it's a dream hunt - well, one that's fun to dream about, who knows if it'll ever come true! I just want to make sure I'm abiding by all the rules and regulations in regards to getting a tag and building preference points. I'll do some looking on the Wyoming Fish and Game site, at your request, and see how it all works out.

Do you get a point a year? Or can you pay extra for more points (not that I'm in the financial position to do so..)? Just curious.

Might be worth listing a doe tag as a second choice so the years you dont' draw a buck tag you still get to go hunt Wyoming.

Yes, only 1 point per year. Apply for Area 78 Type 1 and cross your fingers for a license from the random pool.

One each year is the max. I second the doe tag idea- antelope are fantastic table fare if cared for properly. Doe tags should be a little easier to come by.

What's the difference in the "types" you guys are referencing?
The nice part about this is that I have a place to stay while I'm out there, I'd do a DIY hunt as I hear they are plentiful in the area, and while I'd like a buck, a doe would be cool too. Heck, it isn't that far of a drive for me either.

Thank you for the information! You guys have been a ton of help, and I've only been on this site for an hour! Glad it's been a slow morning at work, but I should probably try to get SOMETHING accomplished. I made sure to list Eastman's as a favorite, and I'll be back at some point.

Thanks again for the help, with the cost involved, and no guarantee to hunt, I'm sure my wife will be a little leary (she's back in college, hasn't had a job for a year, but will be employed in May, wohoo!), but I think we'll give it a whirl!

If you are able to pick up a NR Type 6 or 7 tag cost won't be too much. Reduced price tags are $48 for NR. Add in the Conservation stamp and you are looking at about $60 total.

Better to hunt a doe in Wyoming than not hunt Wyoming at all.
